Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: The Garden and the Sword

The pressure from the sky faded, but the feeling of being watched did not.

Kim Dokja leaned against the rooftop railing, staring at the newest system notification as it slowly dissolved from his vision.

Observation.

That was the Star Stream's favorite response when it encountered something it didn't fully understand.

Which meant one thing.

"They're going to study you," Dokja muttered.

Persephone stood among the flowers of her garden, running her fingers along the petals of a dark crimson bloom.

"I assumed as much."

Yoo Joonghyuk sheathed his sword halfway, though his hand never left the hilt.

"That means any future interference will be scrutinized."

Dokja nodded.

"Yeah. Which means if Persephone casually wipes out another scenario monster, the administrators might escalate things."

Persephone glanced over her shoulder.

"You worry too much."

"That's literally how I stay alive."

She gave a soft laugh.

The flowers around her swayed as if responding to the sound.

Yoo Joonghyuk's eyes followed the movement carefully.

"You control this vegetation without stigma activation," he said.

It wasn't a question.

Persephone looked mildly curious.

"What is a stigma?"

Dokja answered.

"A skill granted by the Star Stream."

"Ah."

She looked down at the vines curling around her feet.

"These are older than your system."

Yoo Joonghyuk's eyes narrowed slightly.

"That confirms it."

Dokja sighed.

"Confirms what?"

"She is not bound by the Star Stream."

Dokja rubbed his temple.

"Yes, Joonghyuk. We established that several chapters ago."

Yoo Joonghyuk ignored the sarcasm.

His gaze remained fixed on Persephone.

"You entered this world by crossing narratives."

Persephone tilted her head slightly.

"That is an interesting way to phrase it."

Dokja blinked.

"…Wait, that's actually pretty accurate."

Yoo Joonghyuk crossed his arms.

"If she is truly outside the narrative system, then her existence creates instability."

Dokja sighed again.

"You sound like the administrator."

"I sound logical."

Persephone stepped closer to them.

The scent of the garden followed her.

"You dislike instability."

Yoo Joonghyuk answered without hesitation.

"Yes."

"And yet your life seems full of it."

Dokja coughed.

"Careful. You're poking the regressor again."

Yoo Joonghyuk didn't respond.

But his gaze sharpened slightly.

Persephone watched him for a moment.

Then she smiled faintly.

"You're strong."

Dokja blinked.

"That's your conclusion?"

"Yes."

She looked directly at Yoo Joonghyuk.

"Your power carries the weight of many battles."

Yoo Joonghyuk said nothing.

But Persephone continued.

"And many failures."

Dokja winced.

She really doesn't hold back.

For a moment, Yoo Joonghyuk's expression hardened.

Then he spoke quietly.

"You claim to be the Queen of the Underworld."

"Yes."

"Then you should understand something."

His hand moved slightly on his sword.

"If you threaten this world, I will kill you."

The rooftop fell silent.

Dokja sighed deeply.

"Why is murder always your opening negotiation tactic?"

But Persephone did not seem offended.

Instead—

She looked amused.

"You're confident."

"I'm realistic."

"You think you could defeat me."

Yoo Joonghyuk didn't answer.

That silence said enough.

Persephone stepped closer.

Now only a few steps separated them.

The vines around the rooftop shifted slowly, reacting to the tension.

Dokja raised his hands again.

"Okay, let's not start a boss battle on my rooftop—"

Yoo Joonghyuk drew his sword fully.

The blade gleamed faintly with stigma energy.

"I want to test something."

Dokja groaned.

"Of course you do."

Persephone watched the sword calmly.

"You wish to measure my strength."

"Yes."

Her smile returned.

"Very well."

Dokja blinked.

"Wait—you're agreeing?!"

Neither of them listened to him.

Yoo Joonghyuk moved first.

Fast.

Faster than most incarnations could even perceive.

His sword cut through the air toward Persephone in a precise strike meant to test reaction speed rather than kill.

But before the blade reached her—

A vine shot upward.

The sword struck it.

Metal rang sharply against living wood.

The vine didn't break.

Instead, several more surged from the ground, twisting around the blade.

Yoo Joonghyuk reacted instantly.

His sword flashed again, severing the vines in a blur of movement.

They fell to the ground—

Only to regrow seconds later.

Dokja watched with tired resignation.

"…Yep. This was inevitable."

Persephone had not moved from her position.

She simply observed.

"Your swordsmanship is impressive."

Yoo Joonghyuk lunged again.

This time faster.

His blade cut through multiple vines before they could fully form.

The wind from the strike rippled through the garden.

But just before the blade reached Persephone—

The ground itself shifted.

Thick roots erupted upward, forming a barrier between them.

The sword struck the wooden shield with a heavy crack.

The rooftop trembled.

For a moment—

They remained locked there.

Sword against living earth.

Persephone looked at him calmly through the shifting vines.

"You fight well."

Yoo Joonghyuk pulled back, landing several meters away.

His eyes had sharpened now.

That exchange had told him something important.

She wasn't just powerful.

Her power ignored the normal limitations of probability.

Dokja pushed his glasses up.

"Well, congratulations Joonghyuk."

Yoo Joonghyuk glanced at him.

"You've confirmed she's ridiculously overpowered."

Persephone laughed softly.

The garden bloomed brighter again.

"I wouldn't say that."

Dokja pointed at the massive vines surrounding the rooftop.

"You just blocked a regressor sword strike without moving."

"That seems efficient."

Yoo Joonghyuk slowly lowered his blade.

Not in surrender.

But in acknowledgment.

"You are strong."

Persephone inclined her head slightly.

"As are you."

Dokja stretched his arms.

"Great. Mutual respect achieved. Can we stop before the administrator decides this counts as a narrative violation?"

Almost immediately—

A system message appeared.

[Probability tension stabilizing.]

Dokja groaned.

"See? They're literally monitoring our fight scenes."

Persephone looked up at the sky again.

"They're very invested in this story."

"Of course they are," Dokja said.

"You're the biggest plot twist they've seen in centuries."

She smiled faintly.

"I'm glad to be entertaining."

Yoo Joonghyuk sheathed his sword again.

But this time, when he looked at her—

His gaze held something new.

Not just suspicion.

Recognition.

Because if Persephone truly existed outside the Star Stream…

Then for the first time across countless regressions—

The story had changed in a way even he could not predict.

And that possibility was both dangerous…

And intriguing. 🌑⚔️🌸📖
