Chapter 1 - The Collector

Darcy POV

The pain was brief and absolute.

Like touching something very hot — a single, searing second of it — and then it was over, leaving behind a warmth that pulsed in my wrist like a second heartbeat I hadn't agreed to.

I looked down.

The mark had appeared on my inner wrist while I was still catching my breath from the handshake — two thorns, intertwined, rendered in lines so precise they might have been drawn with a needle by someone who had done it ten thousand times before. The surrounding skin was flushed, warm to the touch. As I watched, it pulsed once. Twice. A faint amber glow, like something lit from underneath, and then it settled into my skin like it had always been there.

Like it had always been going to be there.

"That's permanent," I said.

"Yes."

"You could have mentioned that."

"I mentioned the binding nature of the agreement."

I looked up at him. Caspian Ashworth — or whatever his real name was, whatever name a three-hundred-year-old Fae prince gave himself when he was pretending to be human in Notting Hill — was watching me with an expression that gave away precisely nothing. Gold eyes. Still face. The particular composure of someone who had been keeping things to himself for so long it had stopped feeling like a choice and become a condition.

He had caught me when I stumbled. Both hands at my elbows, steadying, before I'd even registered I was going to stumble. The contact had lasted two seconds at most.

I was still thinking about it. That annoyed me.

I stepped back. He let me go.

"Tell me everything," I said. "All of it. Start from the beginning and don't leave anything out."

Something moved in his expression. Not quite guilt. Not quite an apology. Something in the space between them that he smoothed over before I could identify it properly.

"Of course," he said.

He was thorough, I'd give him that.

We sat back down in the two chairs across the low table, and he told me about the Fae realm — Aetheris, he called it, a word that sat in the air with a weight that suggested it was older than the language he was using to say it. He told me about the four courts and their seasons and what each of them meant in terms of magic and political structure. He told me about the Solstice Summit, the Binding Decree, the specific legal machinery that had been grinding toward him for forty years while he stood on the other side of a mirror in an abandoned Tube station and pretended it wasn't.

He told me about his mother. This was the only part where something shifted underneath the control — a fractional thing, barely visible, the way a wall shifts before it cracks. Queen Isolde of the Autumn Court. Dying. Still sharp, still in possession of a throne, she was running out of time to defend.

He told me about his brother. This part he delivered with the careful precision of someone who had thought very hard about how to describe a particular kind of danger and had decided that accuracy was more useful than drama. Ronan. Older. Charming. Allied with the Winter Court and with Maren, the Queen's advisor, who was the kind of person whose name produced a very specific quality of silence when Caspian said it.

I filed all of it. I was good at filing things. It was most of the job.

He told me about iron — that it burned Fae, that my father's ring was useful, that I should keep it on me at all times in the Autumn Court. He told me about glamour. He told me about Fae food, which was addictive in quantities beyond what he would personally approve of, and about not making bargains with anyone else in the court, and about time, which moved differently in Aetheris in ways that were generally consistent but occasionally weren't.

Then he told me about the Fae prohibition on lying.

I tested it immediately.

"Are you going to get me killed?" I said.

"I intend to prevent that with everything available to me."

"That's not the same as no."

"No," he agreed. "It is not."

I watched him say it. There was no flicker, no tell, no micro-expression of someone working around a deception. He was telling the truth. He was also, I was increasingly certain, not telling all of it.

"What does being your consort actually require?" I said. "Specifically. Beyond appearing at your side at court events."

"The court will need to believe the bond is genuine," He held my gaze. "There is a magical component to a consort bond. A connection. It would need to appear convincing."

"Appear convincing, or be convincing?"

"In the Fae court," he said carefully, "those are not always different things."

I looked at him. He looked back. Neither of us moved.

"What does the bond involve?" I said. "All of it."

"A visible mark." He nodded at my wrist. "Which you already have. A presence at my side at court functions. Physical proximity suggests intimacy." A pause, fractional, the length of someone choosing their next word with great care. "And the sharing of certain aspects of the connection."

"Which aspects?"

"I will explain further when we are closer to departure."

The silence between us had a shape to it. I'd learned to read silences the way I read people — by what they contained, by what was filling the space where words should have been.

"You're leaving something out," I said.

That almost-smile again. The one that started and stopped at the corner of his mouth before it could become anything. "I am Fae. We always leave something out."

"That's not reassuring."

"I know."

I looked at the mark on my wrist for a long time after he showed me out.

I sat on the Tube home and I held my wrist in my lap and I looked at the intertwined thorns and I did what I always did when I was presented with a problem that was larger than the framework I'd built to contain it: I catalogued what I knew, identified what I didn't, and made a list.

What I knew: the mark was permanent. The bargain was binding. Breaking it carried consequences he had described as severe and declined to specify. I was going to a Fae court in a parallel realm to pretend to be a prince's chosen partner for thirty days, at the end of which I would receive six hundred thousand pounds.

What I didn't know: everything he hadn't told me, which was considerable and which arranged itself in my mind like a series of closed doors along a corridor I hadn't yet been permitted to walk down.

What I needed to know: what was behind the doors.

I thought about his face when I'd said you're leaving something out. The almost-smile that hadn't quite committed. The gold eyes that gave away nothing he hadn't decided to give.

He was going to be a problem.

Not the dangerous kind — or not only the dangerous kind. The other kind. The kind that made you pay attention when you'd specifically decided not to.

I had decided not to.

I looked at the mark.

It was warm. It had been warm since it appeared, a constant low pulse of heat, like holding your wrist near a candle flame from a distance of about six inches. Not uncomfortable. Not painful. Just there. Just present. Just refusing to be ignored.

I told it to stop it.

It pulsed once more, amber, and then settled back into its warmth.

I got off at Bethnal Green and walked home in the rain that had finally made its decision and gone with drizzle, which was the most London of all possible outcomes, and I let myself into the flat to find Wren at the kitchen table with a mug of something and a look that meant she had been waiting.

Wren was twenty-six and had worked behind bars since she was eighteen and had consequently developed a talent for reading rooms that was, in my professional opinion, better than most people I'd worked with. She was also my best friend, which meant she had been reading me specifically for seven years and had catalogued most of my tells.

She looked at me when I came in.

She looked at my wrist.

I pulled my sleeve down before she could see the mark — an instinct, fast, the kind of fast that came from knowing something was visible before you'd fully decided whether you wanted it to be.

She clocked it anyway. Of course, she did.

"Long day?" she said.

"New client," I said. I went to the kettle. "Private. Unusual brief."

"How unusual?"

"Considerably."

She wrapped both hands around her mug. "Darce."

"I'm fine."

"You pulled your sleeve down."

"It's cold."

"It's twenty degrees here, I've had the heating on since six." She watched me make tea. "Is this a safe job?"

I thought about gold eyes and a back room that was larger than physics permitted and a mark on my wrist that pulsed like a heartbeat.

"I'll be careful," I said.

"That's also not the same as yes."

I turned around. She was looking at me with the expression I liked least, the one that meant she had decided to let something go for now but had not decided to let it go permanently.

"I'm going away for about a month," I said. "Private client, full confidentiality. I'll be in touch when I can but it might be intermittent."

"A month."

"Roughly."

"Doing what?"

"I can't say."

"Darcy."

"Wren."

We looked at each other across the kitchen. Seven years of friendship in the space between us, all the shorthand and the history and the two AM conversations and the particular quality of trust that comes from someone seeing you at your worst and staying anyway.

"It pays well," I said. "Very well. More than I've earned in three years combined."

Something shifted in her expression. She knew what that meant. She knew the number — I had told her the number because she had asked and because keeping it from her had felt like the kind of secret that poisons the container it's kept in. She knew what clearing it would mean.

She looked at me for a long moment.

"Call me," she said. "Whatever the confidentiality is, call me at least once a week or I will do something drastic."

"Like what?"

"I haven't decided. It'll be creative."

I crossed the kitchen and hugged her. She held on longer than usual, her arms tight around my shoulders, the hug of someone who was not going to ask any more questions and was extremely unhappy about it.

"I'll call," I said into her hair.

"You'd better."

I had forty-eight hours before we left.

I spent the first twenty-four hours reading everything I could find about Fae. This turned out to be simultaneously vast and nearly useless — human records of the Fae were full of contradictions, full of rules that cancelled each other out, full of the particular confusion of people who had encountered something they didn't have an adequate framework for and had done their best to describe it using the frameworks they had.

Iron, most sources agreed on. Running water, some of them. Not eating the food, not making promises, not saying thank you — this last one came up enough times in enough different traditions that I noted it, though I wasn't sure what to do with it.

None of it captured the thing I kept coming back to. The thing I had seen in his face, just for a second, when the shared dream I hadn't yet had would make sense of in retrospect — but that was later. What I kept coming back to was simpler than that. The way he had caught me when I stumbled. Both hands, immediate, before I'd even known I was going to go. The way he had let me go the moment I stepped back.

The way he had looked when I asked if I was going to die, and he had given me the answer that wasn't, no.

I closed my laptop at two in the morning and lay in the dark and turned the iron ring on my finger and thought about closed doors along a corridor I hadn't been permitted to walk down yet.

I fell asleep at three.

I dreamed of a forest.

The trees were enormous — their bark the colour of deep amber, their leaves gold and copper even in the dark, their canopy so high I couldn't see where it ended. The light was wrong in the way that dream-light is always slightly wrong, coming from everywhere and nowhere, a permanent bronze dusk that seemed to emanate from the trees themselves rather than from any sky.

The air smelled of woodsmoke.

I knew, with the absolute certainty of dreams, that I was not in London.

And then I turned and he was there.

Twenty feet away, standing in the space between two enormous trees, he was looking at me with an expression I had not yet seen on his face in the waking world — not the careful neutrality, not the almost-smile. Something rawer than either of those things. Something that looked, on someone who gave away nothing, startlingly like alarm.

"You're here," he said.

"Obviously," I said, because even in dreams, apparently I defaulted to the practical. "What is this? Why are you in my dream?"

He was quiet. The forest moved around us, leaves turning slowly in air that had no wind. I looked at him — the gold eyes brighter here than in the shop, the pointed ears visible, the particular quality of his face without the soft edges of the glamour he maintained in the human world.

He looked like what he was here. He looked like he belonged here, in this amber light, among these impossible trees.

He looked, I thought, like someone who had been a long way from home for a very long time.

"It would appear," he said finally, with the care of someone choosing every word as they went, "that the bond has begun to connect us sooner than expected."

I stared at him. "You're in my head."

"I am in my own dreamspace. You are here with me." A pause. "These are not the same thing."

"They seem fairly equivalent from where I'm standing."

"The consort bond creates a connection." He looked, for just a moment, like he was deciding how much to say. "A bridge, of sorts, between our sleeping minds. It is generally a late-stage development. It should not have started this quickly."

I looked at him. I looked at the forest. I looked at the mark on my wrist, which was glowing here — not the faint warmth of the waking world but actually glowing, amber and gold, the intertwined thorns lit from within.

"What else?" I said. "In the dream, at least. You can't lie, can you? Not ever?"

"Fae cannot lie," he confirmed. "In dreams I am also —" He paused. "Less guarded. Ask carefully."

I considered him for a long moment. The raw alarm was still there, underneath the composure that had reasserted itself, visible only because I was looking for it and because here, in his forest, the distance between his face and his feelings was shorter than it was in the waking world.

"The consort bond," I said. "What does it actually involve? All of it. Everything you left out."

He told me.

He told me about the shared dreams — which were happening, which had started twelve hours after I'd shaken his hand, which should have taken months and hadn't. He told me about the heightened awareness that would develop — the way I would begin to sense his proximity, his emotional state, eventually his physical wellbeing and his mine.

Then he told me about the chambers.

"We share chambers," I said.

"For the bond to appear genuine to the court —"

"The bed," I said. "Are you going to tell me about the bed or am I going to have to ask?"

A pause that lasted slightly too long. "The chambers have one."

"One bed."

"Traditionally. For the court's —"

"One bed," I said again, flatly.

"Yes."

I looked at him. He met my eyes with the expression of someone who had made a calculation and was now receiving the consequences of it in real time.

"You trapped me," I said.

It came out even. Not a shout — I didn't shout when I was genuinely angry, I went quiet, which was something most people found more alarming. I watched him receive it. I watched him not flinch and not deflect and not produce a technically-true statement designed to redirect the conversation.

He just stood there in his amber forest and took it.

"I needed —" he started.

"I know what you needed." I looked at him steadily. "I wanted you to hear yourself say it."

The forest was quiet around us. Leaves turned. Light moved.

"What else?" I said. "All of it. Now."

He told me the rest.

The consummation clause. The way the bond deepened with genuine emotion — this part he delivered with the particular care of someone who had realised, mid-sentence, that it was more relevant than he had originally accounted for. The fact that a fraudulent bond, if discovered by the court, meant execution for both parties.

When he finished, I stood in his amber forest and looked at the trees and did the only thing available to me, which was to think.

I thought about £200,000 and three years and seven more to go. I thought about six hundred thousand pounds. I thought about the closed doors along the corridor and what it meant that I was now standing inside the corridor itself.

And then I thought: he caught me when I stumbled. He didn't have to do that. He did it before I'd even started to fall.

That wasn't strategy. That was instinct.

I filed it.

"Can the bargain be broken?" I said. "The sigil. The deal. Can I get out of it?"

"Only at lethal cost to both parties."

"So I have no exit."

"Not without consequence, no."

I turned the iron ring on my finger. In the dream, it looked different — darker, more present, the iron of it carrying a weight it didn't have in the waking world. I thought about my father. I thought about the fact that he had left me this ring, plain and dark and worth nothing, and everything else he'd left me had been debt.

Some debts you inherit. Some you choose.

I had chosen this one with my eyes open. Or open enough. And the doors that were still closed — I would open them myself, one by one, until there were none left.

"Then we'd better make sure it works," I said.

He looked at me with something I couldn't quite name in his gold eyes. Something that wasn't relief and wasn't gratitude and was somewhere in the vicinity of both.

"I'm not happy about it," I added. "I want to be clear about that. And when the thirty days are done, we're going to have a very detailed conversation about what constitutes adequate disclosure."

"Agreed," he said.

"Every last thing you left out."

"Agreed."

"Good." I looked around at the amber forest one more time — at the enormous trees, the bronze light, the leaves turning in their windless air. I looked at the mark on my wrist, glowing gold and warm. "This is your dreamspace?"

"Yes."

"It's not bad."

"Thank you," he said, and I thought I heard something underneath the two words that he hadn't entirely intended to let out.

I woke up at three in the morning, gasping, heart pounding, in the dark of my own room.

My wrist was burning faintly amber.

And very faintly, impossibly, across the distance of all of London — I could hear a heartbeat that wasn't mine.
