Chapter 4 - The Storm in Her Eyes

The city streets were quiet, but Kael could feel the tension in every shadow. He walked with purpose, his cloak whipping behind him like the tail of a storm. He hadn't expected to see anyone from his past—especially not her.

Then he saw her.

Lyssa. His childhood best friend. His first love. Standing by the fountain, laughing with friends she had made in his absence. Time had changed her, made her stronger, more radiant… but her eyes—the same bright, fierce spark—pulled something deep in Kael's chest.

For a heartbeat, Kael almost forgot the world, almost forgot the storm swirling in his veins. Almost.

But instinct kicked in.

One of her friends, the boy who had been lingering too close, too interested, was more than he seemed. Kael's senses flared—he could feel the deception, the lies, the threat. He didn't hesitate. In a blink, the boy was gone, a silent strike no one saw coming, leaving only a faint echo of fear.

Lyssa froze. Shock and horror painted her face. "Kael… what… what did you do?!" she screamed.

Kael's eyes softened for a moment, but only for a moment. "He was a threat. I couldn't let him endanger you… or me." His voice was calm, precise, colder than the storm outside, but inside, a war raged—between love, duty, and the cruelty the world had made him.

The crowd gasped and scattered. Whispers rose. The boy who had stood beside Lyssa had vanished, and the city now knew the Stormborn was not to be trifled with. Fear spread like wildfire.

Lyssa's voice trembled. "You… you're a monster!"

Kael didn't answer immediately. Instead, he extended a hand, firm and commanding. "Come with me. Now. I will keep you safe."

Before she could protest, the city's guards began moving in, alerted by the incident. Kael's mind raced. He couldn't let anyone harm her—not her, not the people he cared for, not even himself. He raised a hand, and a wall of wind and debris erupted around them, clearing the streets, shoving the guards back without harming a single civilian.

By nightfall, Kael had brought Lyssa to his castle—a towering fortress perched on a cliff, windows glowing with flickering torchlight. He guided her inside and closed the gates, the heavy locks clicking into place.

"You… you locked me in?" Lyssa's eyes filled with tears, a mix of fear, anger, and disbelief.

"Yes." Kael's voice was low, unwavering. "You're safe now. From everyone. From this city. From them. You'll stay here until I say otherwise."

Lyssa's fists clenched. "You… you're insane!"

Kael looked out the tall window, watching the storm clouds gather once more. "Insane? Perhaps. Necessary? Absolutely. One day you'll understand."

Lyssa's gaze met his. For the first time, she saw the man Kael had become—not just the boy she once knew, but someone terrifying, brilliant, and unstoppable. And somewhere deep inside, a flicker of the old Kael she loved remained.

A flicker. Just enough to make her wonder… what is he really? A villain? Or something far more dangerous… and heroic?

Outside, the wind howled. Lightning struck the distant towers of the city. The last Stormborn stood silently, a shadow against the raging storm, plotting, protecting… and preparing for the next move.
