POV: Zara
Everything is foggy. Thick, heavy fog that wraps around my thoughts and pulls me down into darkness every time I try to surface. I know I should be afraid, but the fear feels distant, like it belongs to someone else.
Voices drift through the haze. Sometimes close, sometimes far away.
"...increase the dosage..."
"...can't keep her under forever..."
"...baby's heart rate..."
I try to open my eyes, but my eyelids are too heavy. Try to move my hands, but they won't respond. My body doesn't belong to me anymore.
Time has no meaning. Hours could be days. Days could be hours.
Sometimes I dream. Or maybe I'm awake and hallucinating. I see Cassian's face, his dark eyes filled with something that might be love or might be possession. I see Jason, smiling his cold smile. I see my mother, who died when I was twelve, reaching for me.
"Wake up, baby girl," she whispers. "You have to wake up."
