We ran. That's what our lives had become. Running. Hiding. Looking over our shoulders at every sound.
I drove through the night, taking back roads and avoiding highways where cameras might capture our license plate. Zara slept fitfully in the passenger seat, her face pale in the dashboard lights. Every few minutes, I glanced over to make sure she was still breathing.
Dr. Wen had given us enough medication to last a week. Prenatal vitamins, progesterone to support the pregnancy, pain relievers Zara could safely take. He'd also given me detailed instructions on warning signs to watch for. Bleeding, severe cramping, fever, decreased fetal movement.
If any of those happened, we'd need medical care. Real medical care. The kind we couldn't get while hiding from the police.
I tried not to think about that.
