Chapter 45 - CHAPTER 45 — The Inheritance Protocol

The air itself sharpened.

Arjun's new Burst form—

grey outer ring, silver inner ring, and a faint white slit of light forming between them—

felt different from anything he had touched before.

Not wild.

Not unstable.

Not instinct-driven.

But clear.

Like the world had shifted into a sharper resolution.

The cavern's breathing slowed.

The Shades' twitching quieted.

Even Eleven paused, observing the change with mechanical interest.

Meera whispered, almost afraid:

"Arjun… what is that…?"

Arjun didn't answer.

Because he didn't know.

He only knew it wasn't Phase Two.

It wasn't the echo taking over.

It was something formed by his choice, not his inheritance.

Prototype Eleven's silver eyes narrowed.

"…unexpected evolution.

Does not match projected Phase Tree."

Arjun took a step forward.

"Get used to disappointment."

The cavern trembled as the two forces clashed in the air without touching.

Even the air between them warped.

---

Prototype Eleven raised his right hand.

Lines of silver fractured across his arm like lightning trapped under skin.

His voice deepened:

"INHERITANCE PROTOCOL:

INITIATE."

Rudra's face drained of color.

"No—

NO—!!

ARJUN, DON'T LET HIM TOUCH YOU!"

Samar gripped the pillar, panting.

"Why—?

What's protocol-whatever?"

Rudra shouted:

"ELEVEN WAS DESIGNED TO ABSORB ANY INCOMPLETE ORIGIN HOST!"

Meera's blood froze.

"So he can… take Arjun's echo?!"

"No."

Rudra shook his head violently.

"He'll take Arjun's mind."

Arjun's body tightened, breath sharp.

Eleven lowered his hand like a ruler delivering judgment.

"You do not deserve to exist.

Your echo belongs to me."

---

Eleven vanished.

Arjun reacted instantly.

His new Burst pulsed—

And he predicted Eleven's path before Eleven even finished moving.

He pivoted, placing his palm forward—

BOOM—!!

Their two forces collided.

Grey-silver spiral vs pure silver.

The cavern floor split into a canyon around their clash.

Samar shielded his eyes.

Rudra ducked behind a fallen pillar.

Meera covered her head, blood running down her arm.

Arjun held his ground—

but Eleven's pressure was crushing.

Like gravity multiplied.

Like his bones wanted to fracture.

Eleven stepped forward, pushing Arjun's Burst inward.

"You cannot win.

Your design is flawed."

Arjun's teeth grit.

"Maybe.

But I wasn't designed to win."

He twisted his stance, redirecting Eleven's force sideways—

Eleven slid across the ground, his movement glitching mid-slide.

The shockwave blasted apart two Shades instantly.

Arjun exhaled, chest shaking.

"What's wrong, Prototype?

You're slipping."

Eleven's jaw cracked sideways.

"…error…

adjusting…"

He vanished again—

Straight toward Arjun's head.

---

Samar's new Filtering Lens activated.

The noise of the battle vanished.

Only one thread remained—

Eleven's real trajectory.

Samar shouted with everything he had:

"ARJUN—RIGHT SIDE—NOW!!"

Arjun didn't question it.

He snapped his head to the right—

And Eleven's hand—

aimed for Arjun's neck—

missed by less than a hair.

Instead of absorbing Arjun's echo,

his fingers sliced open empty air.

Meera gasped.

Rudra blinked in shock.

Arjun turned toward Samar.

"You… saw that?"

Samar grinned, pale and barely conscious.

"Filter ability…

cuts out fake movements…

shows only the real threat…"

He dropped to his knee, panting hard.

"Don't die, bro…

you still owe me food."

Arjun's throat tightened.

"Thanks."

He turned back to Eleven—

Just in time to see the prototype "correcting" itself,

movements smoothing,

errors fading.

"Your ally should not exist.

Adaptation cannot surpass Origin."

Arjun raised his stance.

"That's your problem.

You think everything follows rules."

The white slit of light in Arjun's eyes widened slightly.

---

Eleven shifted his focus.

To Meera.

The cavern chilled.

"…anchor detected.

Sever anchor.

Destabilize host."

Meera staggered back, face pale.

"No—

stay away—"

Arjun's Burst exploded dangerously.

"ELEVEN—DON'T YOU—!!"

Eleven extended a finger—

A silver thread of mental force shot toward Meera.

Meera screamed, clutching her head—

But she didn't fall.

She forced her feet to stay planted.

She forced her eyes open.

She forced her voice out:

"ARJUN—PLEASE—

DON'T LOSE YOURSELF TO PROTECT ME!"

Arjun froze.

His Burst flickered.

Her voice wasn't begging.

It wasn't afraid.

It was pleading for him, not for her own safety.

Meera took a shaky step forward.

"You don't have to become a monster to save me.

I'd rather die than watch you become like him!"

Arjun's chest cracked open emotionally.

And that crack—

Let in the light.

Grey brightened.

Silver condensed.

White deepened.

Eleven stepped back involuntarily.

"…host rejecting override…

why…?"

---

Rudra's hand shook as he activated the damaged tablet he had salvaged from his pocket.

A hidden file opened—

Faint text glowing:

> Prototype 11 — Kill Switch Condition:

"Echo must encounter contradictory anchor.

Must witness emotional rejection of symbiosis."

Rudra shouted:

"ARJUN—!!

ELEVEN CAN BE SHUT DOWN ONLY IF HE SEES YOUR HUMANITY BREAK HIS EXPECTATIONS!"

Arjun blinked.

"So… being myself hurts him?"

Rudra nodded.

"YES!

He cannot understand love, fear, or choice—

those emotions destabilize his core!"

Eleven's face finally cracked.

Porcelain edges splitting.

Veins glowing too fast.

"…error…

contradiction detected…

system failing—"

Arjun stepped forward.

"Welcome to humanity."

---

Eleven's stability dropped—

and instantly every other Shade around them SCREAMED.

Their bodies twitched violently.

Cracks widened.

Silver poured out.

They lunged toward Arjun, Meera, Samar, and Rudra simultaneously.

Like a hive losing its queen.

Rudra shouted:

"THEY'RE GOING FERAL—RUN—!!!"

But there was nowhere to run—

The cavern floor split open.

Blue veins erupted upward.

The walls folded inward like a machine closing.

The ground beneath them vanished.

Arjun grabbed Meera—

Samar grabbed Arjun—

Rudra jumped after them—

And the entire group was swallowed into a glowing chute of Root energy—

Down into the heart

of a massive

living

Root conduit.

The world turned upside down.

Everything went white.
