Chapter 44 - CHAPTER 44 — The Brother He Never Wanted

Prototype Eleven stepped out of the glowing depths like a ghost made of silver light.

He looked almost normal.

Almost human.

Almost Arjun.

Same height.

Same frame.

Same face—

but expression carved from cold stone.

His eyes were not silver-ringed

like Arjun's.

They were pure silver, pupil erased.

A perfect echo vessel.

Meera's breath left her chest in a shaking gasp.

"He… looks… like you…"

Arjun didn't answer.

Because Eleven's gaze met his—

and something cold and metallic locked onto Arjun's heartbeat.

It was like being scanned.

Not by a machine.

By a mirror that judged him unworthy.

Samar wiped blood from his mouth, leaning against a pillar.

"Well.

That's creepy.

Does he have your brain too or just your face?"

Rudra grit his teeth.

"No.

Prototype Eleven has no human psyche.

He is a perfect echo-interface.

He was designed to override anything incomplete."

Meera's grip on Arjun tightened.

"Incomplete…?

Arjun isn't incomplete—!"

But Eleven raised a hand.

And every Echo-Shade in the cavern froze.

Their heads bowed.

Limbs folded.

Bodies knelt.

Like a hive obeying its queen.

Or… its king.

Rudra inhaled sharply.

"He can command them all.

He's not just a prototype—

he's their central node."

Arjun exhaled slowly.

"I don't care what he commands.

He's not taking any of you."

Eleven's head tilted in a smooth, unnatural tilt.

His voice came out cold.

Even.

Emotionless.

"Emotion detected.

Weakness confirmed."

Arjun stepped forward.

"So? Come test it."

---

Eleven moved.

Not fast.

Not loud.

Just suddenly there.

He appeared in front of Arjun without crossing the distance.

Not teleportation—

perfect predictive footwork.

A movement that required no hesitation, no thought, no humanity.

Arjun reacted—

Burst snapping up like a shield—

CRK-THOOM—!!

Eleven's palm grazed Arjun's chest.

Just a graze.

Arjun flew backward across the cavern, smashing into a pillar hard enough to fracture the stone.

Meera screamed his name.

Samar limped toward him instantly.

Arjun gasped, forcing himself upright.

"What… was that…?"

Rudra's face was grim.

"He mirrored your Burst field.

Perfectly."

Arjun's blood ran cold.

"He copied… my Burst?"

Samar answered, horrified:

"No—

he IMPROVED it."

---

Eleven approached calmly.

His voice echoed like metal in water.

"Your Origin Burst is unstable.

Emotion-driven.

Human."

He extended a hand toward Arjun's head.

"Let me correct you."

Arjun's Burst flared violently.

"DON'T TOUCH ME—!"

Eleven didn't even flinch.

"You resist because you are unbalanced."

He stepped closer.

"You feel.

You fear.

You love.

These are inefficiencies."

Meera's heart slammed into her ribs.

She whispered:

"Arjun… don't listen… don't let him get in…"

Eleven turned to her.

Silver veins glowed along his skull.

"You are the primary contamination source."

Meera froze.

Arjun's entire Burst sharpened.

"YOU STAY AWAY FROM HER!"

Eleven watched him like a scientist observing an animal.

Then he pointed one finger.

"Phase Two can be triggered by emotional extremity."

Arjun stiffened.

Eleven continued:

"You protecting the girl will push you past the boundary."

Rudra swore loudly.

"SAMAR—MOVE!

ELEVEN IS TRYING TO FORCE PHASE TWO—!"

Arjun gritted his teeth.

"I won't transform just because you want me to."

Eleven blinked.

Then vanished.

---

A cold spike stabbed into Arjun's mind.

Not physical.

Psychic.

Eleven's voice echoed inside his skull.

"Phase Two sequence initiating.

Core-lock override engaged."

Arjun screamed as silver pain tore through his head.

The echo inside him writhed, excited.

"YES—

LET HIM TAKE OVER—

LET US BECOME—"

Arjun fell to his knees.

"NO—

GET OUT OF MY HEAD—!"

Meera ran forward without thinking.

"ARJUN—!!"

Samar grabbed her wrist.

"MEERA STOP—

He'll KILL you—!"

She yanked her arm free.

"No—

he needs me."

She reached Arjun—

and without hesitation,

wrapped her arms around his head,

pressing her forehead to his.

"ARJUN—LISTEN TO ME!

NOT TO HIM!

NOT TO ANYONE ELSE!

YOU'RE ARJUN VALE—

YOU'RE YOU—

COME BACK—!"

Her voice cut through the mental storm.

Grey light surged.

Silver shrank.

Eleven recoiled—

his mental link pierced by something he wasn't designed to understand.

Emotion.

Love.

Choice.

---

Rudra shouted through the chaos:

"ARJUN—ELEVEN WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO EXIST!!

HE WAS LAB-GROWN AS A PURE ECHO HOST—

NO HUMAN MIND—

NO HEART—

NO SELF!"

Samar's eyes widened.

"Then he's… Arjun without the human part?"

Rudra nodded sharply.

"He's what your father FEARED Arjun would become—

a weapon without a conscience!"

Arjun's Burst flickered—

but Meera's arms held him steady.

Her voice cracked:

"You're not him.

You're not a weapon."

Arjun whispered:

"…I'm not…"

His Burst changed.

Shifted.

Deepened.

The silver curled inward.

The grey sharpened.

A new form began to awaken.

Phase One–Prime → Phase One-Refined.

Eleven's eyes widened for the first time.

"…unexpected…"

---

Eleven blurred behind Meera.

Arjun's heart STOPPED.

"MEERA—BEHIND—!!"

But Meera didn't run.

She turned—

And slapped her bloody palm on Arjun's chest.

"ARJUN—LET ME ANCHOR YOU!"

Grey-silver light burst outward.

Eleven staggered back—

as if he had been hit by a blast of raw incompatibility.

Because Meera was incompatible with him.

Utterly.

Completely.

She represented the one thing Eleven could not process.

Human emotion.

---

A NEW FORM BEGINS TO RISE

Arjun stood.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

The grey-silver around him condensed—

not explosive,

not wild,

but sharp.

Controlled.

Volitional.

His eyes glowed with a new pattern:

Outer grey ring.

Inner silver ring.

A faint white line forming between them.

Rudra's breath caught.

"He's…

forming a dual-core Burst?

No—

that's something else—

something NEW!"

Eleven's expression didn't change—

but his stance shifted.

He recognized threat.

Arjun stepped forward.

"You're not my replacement.

You're not my brother.

You're not my evolution."

His aura tightened like a blade.

"You're just proof of what I refuse to become."

Eleven lowered his head.

"…then be erased."

Arjun's new Burst form ignited.

And the cavern cracked under the pressure.
