Chapter 38 - My Husband

Everything was clearly not fine. Su Wen's brows furrowed. He moved closer and gently placed his hand on her shoulder. "Young Master," he whispered, just loud enough for her to hear, "I can tell when something's bothering you."

She didn't respond, continuing to walk. Only her fingers, trembling faintly beneath the sleeve, gave away the storm inside her. Su Wen's heart tightened.

"Young Master K", he said patiently, "look at me..."

She lowered her head, hesitating for a moment before lifting her gaze under the cloth covering her face. Through his Soul Sense, Su Wen saw her eyes… slightly dim and uncertain.

He took a deep breath. "Did I say something wrong?" he asked cautiously. "Or… did I do something that upset you?"

Du Yue shook her head again, but this time her voice trembled just a little. "No… You didn't. I just… I was thinking…"

Su Wen stepped closer, lowering his voice. "Thinking about what?"

She lowered her gaze again. "…About the Central Continent."

Su Wen finally understood. A helpless smile formed on his lips. "So that's what worried you," he said gently.

Su Wen let out a soft sigh. He wanted to flick her forehead but stopped himself since they were "men." He just punched her on the shoulder, painful enough to snap her out of her sadness.

"Ow—!" she yelped in surprise.

"Idiot," Su Wen said softly. Then, with a gentle smile, "Do you want to eat something? There's a famous restaurant nearby."

Du Yue paused for a moment and looked at his face, then said softly, "If you're the one cooking… I'll eat anything."

Su Wen let out a quiet sigh, and as he lifted his gaze, he spotted a spirit ice-cream shop ahead. "Young Master K, come with me. I'll show you around the town. Stay close… otherwise you'll get lost in the crowd."

His steps slowed slightly as he continued in a low, steady voice, "And don't worry… I won't abandon you for anyone else. If you can't keep up, I'll hold your hand or even carry you on my back, as long as you're willing to stay with me."

He paused, his tone turning softer. "But if there ever comes a time when you want to go with someone else… just tell me. Don't leave without saying anything. I won't be angry, or question you. I'll be happy if you find someone who makes you happier than I can. Just… tell me, so I can try to keep moving forward. Otherwise, I'll be…"

He fell silent, letting her imagine the rest.

Du Yue blinked, momentarily stunned. She understood the meaning behind his words… he wasn't joking, nor was he trying to comfort her. He was serious. He truly meant it. He would never abandon her; he would take her with him wherever he went.

But that last sentence…

Her gaze fell on his back, and something about it felt quietly lonely. She wanted to ask why he would say such a thing, why there was a hint of sadness woven into his voice, but the words wouldn't come.

Instead, she held his promise close, engraving those lines deeply into her heart. For now, she simply followed him in silence, feeling a warmth settle inside her… her once-restless heart finally growing steady.

They ate their spirit ice cream without speaking much, both wearing gentle smiles as they quietly enjoyed each other's presence. Du Yue felt unexpectedly happy in her Young Master disguise… because like this, she could keep ordering Su Wen around without feeling embarrassed.

They sat by the lakeside, neither too close nor too far… just the proper distance for two 'men'… sharing the calm silence. No words, no gestures, just peace… and a warm, unfamiliar sense of companionship.

For the first time in their lives, both of them felt they weren't alone. The soft smiles on their faces reflected the same quiet warmth blooming in their hearts.

Du Yue kept sneaking glances at him, blushing furiously beneath her black cover, too shy to meet his eyes. And yet, one persistent thought echoed in her mind, refusing to let go…

'Yes… I am his wife…'

Finally, after some time, they decided they should leave, Su Wen suddenly frowned. He immediately but skilfully used his Mid-stage Soul Awakening realm Soul Sense quietly without alerting anyone and noticed people were following them.

Du Yue noticed his expression immediately and asked in his mind, without any change in her own expression, "What happened?"

"Someone is following us: two Peak-stage Foundation Establishment and three Mid-stage Foundation Establishment," Su Wen said with a grim expression.

But her reaction was nothing like his. It was as if someone had flipped a hidden switch within her, transforming her entirely.

'Who dares? Who would even think of harming my 'husband'?'

A cold, murderous fury surged through her thoughts.

'People like that don't deserve to exist.

Yes… they should die.

Anyone with ill intentions toward him deserves only death.'

Su Wen sensed the subtle shift in the air around her, but he didn't think much of it. He assumed she was simply becoming serious… or perhaps a little nervous… because of the situation.

"Don't worry. I'm here," he said gently, trying to comfort her.

She gave a small nod, her expression perfectly steady.

'Yes… my husband is here. And I will be his sword, cutting down all who stand against his will beneath the heavens.'

Seeing her apparently calm down, Su Wen nodded in satisfaction. "Good."

Du Yue's face didn't change, still hidden beneath her cover, but beneath it a faint blush and a sweet smile bloomed.

'My husband is pleased… He wants me to be his sword. Yes. I'll wipe scum like them off the world for daring to target him.'

Su Wen froze for a moment.

'What…? Why do I feel like she's suddenly happy?'

He frowned slightly, unable to see her expression and growing more confused by the second.

They made their way to the town gate, exchanged a polite nod with Brother Zhang, and headed out… this time in the opposite direction of their village. Du Yue silently drew the 'extra' sword Su Wen had given her, the one that would never find its way back into his hands again.

They didn't fly fast, maintaining a moderate speed and saving their Spiritual Qi, acting as if chatting with each other.

"Yes, five," Su Wen said to her.

Then he asked her softly, "Are you alright? Don't worry too much; let me take care of them, and you maintain a safe distance, just in case."

Du Yue was stunned by his gentle concern.

'He's worrying about me… even now?

He's so cute… how is he thinking about my safety in a moment like this?'

Warmth flickered in her chest… but it was swallowed almost instantly by something far darker.

'I was so happy when he kept following me around…

And those bastards dared to interfere. They dared to break that peace.'

Her expression lowered, shadows gathering behind her eyes. A cold, dangerous calm settled over her.

"They ruined everything…" she whispered under her breath, voice soft, trembling with restrained fury.

"…Those insects. I'll erase them."

Her fingers curled slightly, as if already closing around their throats.

"I'll make them wish they never crossed my path."

Su Wen felt the atmosphere around her stir once more… but now it was laced with a chilling, dangerous cold.
