Evelin's POV
I watched as Jimmy's words seemed to drain all color from Margot's face. I could see the bitter resentment in her expression, the way her thoughts seemed to race with disbelief. How could he treat her this way? She had sacrificed an eye for him, yet now he threatened her for my sake.
The crowd around her gazed with sympathy and pity written across their faces, but I knew Margot well enough to understand she had never required anyone's pity.
She drew a sharp breath. "What makes Evelin so special that you shield her like this?"
The Jimmy she remembered was distant with everyone, never showing kindness without reason.
"Because she didn't abandon me," Jimmy stated simply.
That single response seemed to strike her like a physical blow.
Jimmy's fingers closed around mine. "Let's go."
"Okay," I replied. I had no desire to remain here facing someone I preferred to avoid.
We walked away from the balcony together.
