Jimmy's POV
I locked eyes with Evelin. Our bodies pressed close together.
The coolness of my skin seemed to reach her.
"If I ever truly desired a man, it would only be because I loved him completely. That's the sole reason I'd want him," Evelin said, pulling away from my arms.
Our fingers, which had been entwined moments before, finally let go.
I stared at my empty hands, feeling hollow. Loss crept through my chest like ice.
"We should get out of this room," Evelin said.
I rose slowly to my feet. "How did you get inside?"
Evelin's explanation came softly. "I heard you making sounds of pain. I called out and knocked, but you didn't answer. I was scared something terrible had happened to you, so I entered. I'm sorry for breaking your rule."
She hadn't meant to, but she'd still crossed into this forbidden space.
"Is that all you have to say about this?"
I studied Evelin's face. The whips lining these walls and the oppressive atmosphere would unsettle anyone.
