I dragged myself to work that morning, but my mind was somewhere else entirely. Every task felt impossible, every decision clouded by the mess in my head. I made error after error, signed the wrong documents, and mixed up client files.
My staff started giving me strange looks. They were used to seeing me as the composed executive who never slipped up, who handled everything with precision. But today, I couldn't keep up the facade.
The truth was, I made mistakes all the time. I just usually caught them before anyone noticed, staying late to fix problems and cover my tracks. But today, I couldn't focus long enough to maintain that illusion.
All I could think about was him. The man from her nightmare. Who was he to make her scream like that in her sleep? How deep did their connection run? What had Bonita done to drive that kind of terror into Jessica's dreams? And what was this burning sensation in my chest every time I pictured her with someone else?
