Sleep refuses to come.
I've been lying here for over an hour, surrounded by the steady breathing of my bond group, but my mind won't quiet down. Finally giving up, I slip downstairs to the kitchen. I grab a glass, fill it with cold water, and snag a leftover pizza slice from the refrigerator before stepping onto the back porch.
The night air bites at my skin, crisp and heavy with the scent of evergreens. I settle onto the wooden steps, taking slow bites of pizza while watching silver clouds drift across the moon's face. The pack sleeps peacefully around me, wrapped in the kind of profound quiet that only exists in the deepest hours of night.
