When I woke up again, every muscle in my body screamed in protest, like I'd been trampled by a stampede. My head felt like it was splitting apart, each throb sending waves of agony through my skull.
The moment my vision cleared, instinct kicked in—I had to get to Levi. But Todd's firm hands pressed me back down before I could even sit up properly.
"Levi has round-the-clock protection. I'm monitoring everything personally. If there's any change, you'll know immediately. Right now, you need to rest," he said, his voice leaving no room for argument.
Todd's tone carried an edge I'd never heard before—frustrated, almost irritated. "You're wandering around with a gaping wound in your head. Have I been too soft on you, Sallie? All those home-cooked meals making you reckless?"
I'd never heard Webster sound so sharp, so cutting. Instead of anger, I felt a strange flutter of amusement. "Are you actually mad at me?" I asked, unable to hide my curiosity.
