Sallie's POV
Jill's eyes were bloodshot as she locked onto me, unblinking, like she'd crumble into tears if I dared refuse her.
Something about that strange thought from earlier made me step back instinctively when Jill moved closer, my defenses shooting up.
Her face crumpled immediately, voice shaking with unshed tears like someone had just crushed her spirit. "Sallie?"
Webster finally shook himself out of whatever trance he'd been in and jumped forward, scowling. "Sallie, you're crossing a line."
"Jill's been wronged here. She's backing down, so what gives you the right to keep twisting the knife?" he snapped.
Webster had always been the hothead, so no surprise he'd be first to leap to Jill's defense.
But after all these years, this was the first time Webster didn't sound completely furious when he came at me.
Ever since that kidnapper took back his confession, Webster always seemed guilty around me.
