I didn't give a damn about making Jill pay anymore. I bolted over and stammered, "Doctor, Grandpa Levi—"
The words died in my throat. My heart hung suspended over a razor's edge. But my silence wouldn't stop the doctor from delivering his verdict.
The doctor looked at me—this pale girl with gauze wrapped around her skull, eyes filled with such fragile, desperate hope—and let out a heavy breath. "I'm sorry. We tried everything we could."
That moment shattered the final string keeping me upright, like a bomb detonating inside my skull. Blackness rushed in from every direction, swallowing me whole.
Right before everything went dark, I caught Todd's frantic voice shouting, "Sallie"—then silence claimed me.
I was drowning in endless darkness. The kind that stretched forever, bottomless and infinite. Then suddenly, my mind drifted back to those first days at St. Chaim Reform Academy.
