Chapter 19 - 19

Just like Matt, he became Daredevil not because he possessed superhuman abilities beyond ordinary people, but to protect what he felt he should protect: his love for his father, and his vow!

As Matt said when his father, "Battling" Jack, died: "No one cares about a washed-up professional boxer, except me..."

He will keep his promise; he will help those who are powerless and without aid.

He will extend justice, even if it means using any means necessary.

This is what Daredevil Matt Murdock tried to tell Emil: the root of strength is not in power, but in the spirit, in the precious emotion one wishes to protect in one's heart...

Emil said nothing, his lips tightly pressed, and he turned to leave.

Behind him, Jeffer, the owner of the pool bar, stared blankly at the burning symbol of slaughter on the bar counter, then suddenly woke up and asked loudly, "Sir, you, no, are you Daredevil?"

He felt his loud voice was an offense to Emil, so he quickly lowered his voice and said mysteriously, "Or perhaps, Mr. Matt, the blind man, is actually Daredevil? Then, sir, what about you? Are you also a Superhero? Are you Spider-Man? Or Iron Man?"

Emil's steps faltered, and after a long pause, he shook his head and said, "Mr. Jeffer, there is no Daredevil, and I am not a Superhero.

Those rumors are like alligators in the sewers, just an urban legend."

Urban legends refer to stories widely circulated in cities.

These stories are all untrue, incredible things, such as the supernatural, horror, the bizarre, humor, conspiracy, and so on.

For a time, it was popular to keep alligators as pets in Europe and the U.S., but after the trend passed, many people flushed the alligators down the sewer to abandon them.

Hence, a saying emerged: those young alligators flushed into the sewers did not die; they lived deep in the sewers, feeding on sewer maintenance workers and various garbage.

Some even claimed to know the exact number of alligators.

Jeffer, clutching his one arm, mumbled as he looked at the flames on the bar counter: "How can this be? It's been circulating for so many years, it must be true."

He looked up: "Then, Mr. Emil, the alligators in the sewer might be fake, but have you heard of the Lizardman in the sewer? That must be true, he really exists!

My friend works at the Daily Bugle, and he told me that James, the owner of the Daily Bugle..."

"Huh, where did he go?" Jeffer looked blankly at his now empty pool bar; besides himself, there was no other person.

Emil had already gotten what he needed from Matt, and he was in no mood to continue listening to the pool bar owner's chatter.

However, when Emil returned home, he unexpectedly found his sister Kathleen already home from Stark Company and standing at the door.

He was a bit puzzled, checked his watch, and realized it was almost six o'clock; the day had passed so quickly.

Kathleen welcomed Emil into the house, smiled very gently, and instead of asking about his day's whereabouts, asked, "Emil, how are you feeling? Is your body better?"

Emil laboriously swallowed the food Kathleen piled on his plate to prove that his body no longer needed his sister's worry at all.

He nodded and said, "Sister, my body is completely recovered, and I plan to go back to school tomorrow."

Kathleen was a bit surprised and said nervously, "It's alright, I've already helped you request sick leave from school.

Going back to school so soon, can your body handle it? While studies are important, your health is also very crucial!"

Emil looked up and said, "Don't worry, sister, you know that most of the courses at Columbia University are self-study.

If I feel unwell, I will stop my studies at any time."

He said, "I don't know why, but after returning from the hospital this time, I feel like a new person.

I'm eager to go out and breathe some fresh air; staying at home, on the contrary, would not be suitable for my body's recovery."

This was merely one reason; there was another reason that Emil temporarily couldn't tell Kathleen.

Moreover, as long as he left home, Emil believed he could always find some part-time jobs to do, at least to lighten Kathleen's burden.

Columbia University is located in Manhattan, New York City, U.S., and is not far from Emil's home.

So, after seeing Emil's determination, Kathleen thought about it and agreed.

However, she repeatedly warned Emil: "If you ever feel unwell, please don't force yourself; you can call me anytime, and I'll come to school to pick you up."

Emil gave a wry smile and said, "Sister, I am 21 years old; I am an adult."

He strongly suspected that the timid and weak personality of this body's previous owner might have been related to Kathleen's meticulous care.

Growing up in such a greenhouse, it was natural not to develop a strong character; this was quite understandable.

Kathleen was stunned for a moment.

She and Emil lost their parents when they were young, and she had raised Emil herself.

It could be said that in Kathleen's heart, Emil was both her brother and like her son.

In her impression, Emil had always been that delicate little sprout from childhood.

She had never realized that her brother was already an adult, and in Hell's Kitchen, he should have long grown into a tough guy capable of fighting, killing, and risking his life!

Therefore, even though Emil's words were casual, they brought a misty film of water to Kathleen's eyes, as if she was about to cry.

Emil panicked, fumbling around, quickly stood up from the dining table, took a few tissues from the tissue box, and handed them to Kathleen: "Sister, I said the wrong thing.

You know, I didn't mean that... I'm sorry..."

Kathleen took the tissues from Emil's hand, gently dabbed the corners of her eyes, and smiled through her misty tears: "No, sister isn't blaming you.

Sister just suddenly felt that my Emil has grown into a man and no longer needs his sister's care."

Emil was at a loss, shaking his head repeatedly: "Sister, no matter how much Emil grows or changes, his love for his sister will always remain the same!"

Taking on the post-meal cleanup, Emil watched Kathleen return to her room with a hint of melancholy, and he silently added in his heart: "It's just that, before, sister took care of me until I grew up, and now it's my turn, Emil, to protect you, sister!"
