Ruby's POV
I met his gaze head-on, refusing to back down. The fear that used to consume me around him had faded into something else entirely.
"What's the matter? Upset that I might speak the truth about your precious ex-wife?" I shot back.
But instead of rising to my challenge, he simply watched me with those penetrating eyes.
"No. Because I can't bear the thought of you walking away from me someday."
The words hit me like a physical blow, draining every ounce of fight from my body.
Damn it. Was I pushing too hard?
The tension hung heavy between us until Cloe shifted uncomfortably.
"I should probably give you two some space," she mumbled, shooting me a knowing look before slipping out.
"That argument was ridiculous," I admitted once we were alone. "I hate fighting with you over something so trivial."
