Chapter 7 - Friend or Foe (I)

I looked as the message disappeared. It's time to get started. This game will make everyone question their ally. Friends or foe, we'll all end up dead if these people sct recklessly.

I sighed, this will be tough. I looked at the actors participating in the game. Something just hit me, why is everyone here called actors and not players? It doesn't make sense considering the fact that we're playing games to survive and not really acting…

Is it because of the film? I can't help but fall deep in my thoughts. I shook my head, this isn't the best time to think about such small problems. I should focus on getting out of here alive.

The huge crowd of people that was talking, chatting and making friends a while ago was now filled withdead silence, maybe it's the fact that one of us could be betrayed by the one we thought we knew about well.

I looked at Chin-hae, hopefully we'll be able to finish this game and get through it alive, we've got to survive, there's still unanswered questions from me that needs an explanation.

I looked at the small screen that popped up in front of me. I'll assume everyone here saw it too.

[SYSTEM: Your role is 「sheep」 !

Notice: the role given during a game event will only be applied to the game that it is given in. All roles given during the game will be taken away after it ends.]

What is this? The bible? I'm guessing my role means I'm innocent then. I looked over at Chin-hae face. He remained calm, a little tired. All of us are, it has been a long day, it's hard to adapt to the new reality.

"I got sheep, how about you, hyung?"

I looked over, crossing my arms, letting out a sigh of relief. He doesn't seem to be lying, we'll be fine then.

"That's good, I did too."

"It's good to be on the same team with you."

He smiled at me like a little kid. Now all that's left is to figure out who's the wolf among the herd, the one that's hiding under the sheep's clothing.

And the only way to do that is to observe. I took Chin-hae to a quiet corner of the station, I began to talk.

"Chin-hae, let's split up this round."

Chin-hae face was shocked, he looked as if he'd explode. He was unsure. I took his shoulders, looking in his eyes as I speak again.

"You have to trust me, I know it's risky to leave each other, but, I promise, we'll meet again after the game."

Chin-hae expression went from shocked to disappointed. We've been friends from when we were both in first grade anyways, he knew me better than anyone else yet he's still hesitant about my idea.

I sighed, smiling at him, hoping that it'll give him some reassurance. I took my hands off his shoulder, walking away.

I got further away from him, yet I could still feel his eyes on me. I clenched my fist, it wasn't an easy decision for me either, but for the sake of our survival.

I went and sat down on one of the benches, closing my eyes. I just need to rest and think about this for a bit.

As I was sitting, I could hear the sounds of footsteps coming my way. Shit, am I getting eliminated first? The figure got closer, leaning towards me. Their hand reaching for me, I opened my eyes, Holding onto the arm that reached for me tightly.

I looked up to see who the culprit was. As soon as I saw her face, I let go of her arm. I sighed, moving to the side for her to sit down.

"Gyungho! I didn't know you hated crowds that much, it's so fun to learn more about you."

Mary smiled, looking at me mischievously. For all I know, she could be a wolf.

"And I didn't know that you loved sneaking up on people."

I frowned, I'm sure I'm the older one here and yet she's not showing any manners! I groaned, as I was about to talk, she cuts me off. This insolent little…

"Relax grandpa, you'll get a heart attack."

How could she say that in a middle of a life amd death game?! What is wrong with this woman? I glared at her. That sure hit a nerve…She acts as if I'm 60! I sighed and started to talk.

"What do you want now, Mary?"

She smiled, reaching out her hand.

"For you and Chin-hae to be on a same team with me of course!"

I looked at her reached out hand then back at her face. She was being genuine. But how is this helping me in any way? I have to think about the downsides… what if she's trying to end us first? Is she a wolf?

"And how is this benefiting me in any way?"

Mary pulled back her hand, her expression darkened, she looked more serious.

"Are you serious? You and Chin-hae will gain protection from me and my team during this game obviously."

"And how do I know you're not the imposter?"

This game was about trust. It's a test for the actors, their will to live, their trust for one another. In this game, even the people you trust most could be a foe. That's what those damned creatures want us to believe, they want to see our fear.

"How do I know you're not the imposter then?"

She caught me, there was no way to prove my innocence even if I wasn't the wolf among the herd of 300 sheep. I smirked, might as well give it a try then.

Mary smiled, she knew she won in this battle. She began to talk.

"You can't prove your innocence yet you're expecting me to prove mine. I trust you that you and Chin-hae are sheeps, now, will you trust me?"

Mary stopped before continuing.

"Besides, I'm sure you trusted Chin-hae without him needing to explain himself, but now you're asking me for evidences. Are you biased?"

She stood up from where she was sitting, turning her back to face me. She had a smile spread across that cunning face of hers

"By the way, where's Chin-hae? Isn't he always with you?"

Her head turned around to look at me. As I began to speak

"We decided to split up to gather more information about everyone, we're only a pair and it's hard to do anything that way."

"I see, I'll find him and keep him with me for this game if he agrees to join forces, I'll be seeing you on my team soon, Gyungho."

She smirked, walking away. I stood up from the bench, time to stop slacking off and get to gathering information then.

As I got back to the crowded area where the game started, I could see people teaming up, fighting and collecting food supplies. I wasn't surprised, everyone here wanted to live, no one wants to be the next person to be eliminated.

As night approached, I came to the bench where I was sitting before and tried to remember what I did. I've made no progress, no clues on finding out who's the wolf.

This game wasn't going to work if I do it alone, what if I used that ability? I sat there, trying to turn on the skill.

「All-seeing eye is temporarily turned off due to the game's settings!」

Damn, this is going to be hard. I then check my Rank balance, the currency of this new world, as well as check out the stats system.

「Stats:

Stamina: lv 1

Strength: lv 1

Durability: lv 1

Agility: lv 1

Intelligence: lv 5

Magic skills: lv 2

Weapon skills: lv 1

Combat skills: lv 1

Rank balance: 2,680R 」

I knew my stats would be low, but this got to be a new level of low… I sighed, looking at my stats then back at my balance, turning off the page.

Just when I was zoning out, thinking of ways to get more ranks, a loud screeching sound came from somewhere in the station, the loud sound echoed after it ended.

Seems like the wolf had started their move. I stood up and followed where the noise came from. On my way there, I can see multiple people whispering and running around, as I got closer, I could see a huge crowd in front of me.

Mary saw me coming, turning around and walked towards me. Why is this woman always smiling around me?

"You heard the sound too? I assume."

"Who wouldn't?"

She laughed, wiping away a tear drop from the side of her eye. Mary began talking.

"As you've expected, the wolf made it's first move."

I looked as the crowd started to spread, then walking pass Mary to go and see what happened. It was a bit easier to see now that the group of people is less crowded.

As I got through them one by one, getting as close as I could to the front. I looked at the mess, a young teenager was lying on the ground, she had a knife in her chest, blood soaking her clothes.

So this was the way of eliminating someone from the game, I should've expected this anyways. Whoever is the wolf must be struggling too considering how there's about 297 people to eliminate here and get the pass to enter the next game's arena.

As I was inspecting the body, a message popped up. It was a blue system screen.

[SYSTEM: second game

The role 「Wolf」 had made their first move! Actor 093 owned by the dokkaebi In-su is eliminated!

Discussion for round 1 starts (23h 59 min left)]

"A-aah! My actor!"

A nervous looking dokkaebi cried out from a distance, catching everyone's attention. It had blue fur, 3 eyes with 1 sharp fang on the side of it's mouth. The sad expression on it's face slowly turned into a wide smile.

"Bwahahahaha! What a sad death."

It laughed loudly, causing echoes through the whole station. What was I expecting anyways? It's a dokkaebi, I doubt they have any emotions.

"Eun, I told you to be more careful."

Another dokkaebi voice came out of nowhere, I couldn't see it at least.

"Oh? Did I accidentally turn the settings on? Ah wait…"

I looked as the dokkaebi pulled out something, it was a blocked item. Too bad special skills are blocked during this game…

I looked as the dokkaebi disappeared. Seems like these creatures got a setting to be in the scenario without being seem by actors…

As the dokkaebi disappeared, I could hear fights starts again. The crowd was arguing, people are so selfish sometimes.

"It was her!"

A fairly aged man shouts, pointing at a young highschool girl who was crying on the ground, making people stare.

"N-no! He's wrong! I didn't do it! How could I kill my best friend?"

The man clears his throat and began talking again. I looked at him, He looked around 68 years old, his hair was grey. The man's expression was intense, still pointing at the girl.

"Well, the wolf has to kill everyone to survive and move on to the next game!"

Everyone around him seems to agree, that was a dumb reasoning, the girl could use it against him easily. Anyone would fit the frame if the only clue is that the wolf needs to kill to win.

A young man stepped out from the crowd, he had shoulder length, wavy brown hair. He smiled, standing between the crying girl and the old man, he began to talk.

"Calm down now everyone! If we want to find out the wolf, we have to work together."

A girl walked out from the crowd right after the man stopped speaking, she looked like a highschool student, possibly one of the other girls' friend. Her hair was long, a little wavy and brown. She seems to be the guy's sister.

"He's right, we can't make progress if we continue to fight."

"And who are the both of you?"

People started to question them.

"Y-yeah! Who do you think you are to be telling us what to do?"

Their words were like rocks being thrown at the 2 people standing in the middle of the crowd.

Their eyes opened, the smile that was on their face was gone. They began to speak in a calm yet chilling tone, their voices overlapping one another.

"We're the Kagami twins, pleasure to be working with you all!"

A smile spread across their faces. Great, more freaks for me to deal with.
