"What?!"
The sudden voice startled Nick Fury—and at the same time gave him hope.
It was the Red Queen, the one who had previously invaded the entire systems of his helicarrier at the speed of light!
Xu Dan's Red Queen!
"Oh my God! Hurry!" Nick Fury shouted. If it was this utterly unreasonable artificial intelligence, it should be able to directly seize control of the fighter. "Girl, destroy that fighter immediately!"
"However, without the master's order, the Red Queen cannot attack without authorization," the Red Queen replied mischievously.
"Then contact your master at once! Hurry!"
"But the Red Queen cannot reach the master right now."
Nick Fury's old face darkened. He could hear it clearly—this artificial intelligence had become clever. It was deliberately teasing him!
"Fine!" Fury growled. "You can do whatever you want me to do—but you must destroy that thing first. It's carrying a nuclear bomb!"
The Red Queen sounded satisfied, her voice accompanied by a leisurely stream of procedural notifications."Antarctic military silo opened… A1 interceptor missile launched… Target will be destroyed in twenty seconds."
"Mother—!" Nick Fury was utterly stunned by the Red Queen's method. The voice sounded like that of a twelve- or thirteen-year-old girl, but the style of action felt uncannily like that of a certain militant nation.
Wouldn't it have been enough to simply disable the aircraft's instruments?
Did it really have to be violence against violence?
Did Xu Dan usually write programs like this?
Mother—!
Nick Fury finally let out a long breath. Twenty seconds later, the report came in that the fighter had crashed into the sea.
"Hill, send a team to salvage it and prevent pollution."
"Now? Shouldn't we be supporting the battlefield?"
"No. 'We' would only make things worse."
————————
In the midst of the battlefield, no one knew they had just narrowly escaped death by nuclear fire.
Xu Dan welcomed a new ally.
The person flying over was an elderly man wearing a helmet.
His identity was self-evident.
"Young man, do you need help from an old fellow like me?"
"Old Eric, you came out tonight—how many of your people have been counted?"
"They fight for their honor," he replied calmly. "As you can see, they're all satisfied."
Thor frowned at the newcomer and asked with a hint of hostility, "Who is he?"
"Magneto," Xu Dan said with a smile.
"What an arrogant name!"
"Jealous that someone can fly without a hammer?"
Thor fell silent.
Magneto flexed his fingers.
The corpses of the Chitauri soldiers lying on the ground—and even the remains of those monstrous creatures—suddenly seemed to "come alive."
In truth, it was simply because all of them contained large amounts of metal.
Where there was metal, there was Magneto's domain.
"This—?"
Tony immediately sensed danger and instinctively took several steps back.
Iron Man… iron.
Hiss—
"What's wrong, boy?" Magneto noticed Tony's reaction and found it amusing. "No need to be afraid. I won't do anything to you."
Tony forced a dry smile. "Sir, I don't think I'm afraid, I'm just…"
Xu Dan smiled faintly. Magneto was a decisive man. Since he had come, it meant he intended to act.
And as everyone knew, Magneto's power was virtually invincible against a modern army.
Normally, any force sent to capture Magneto would use non-metallic weapons.
Unfortunately, the Chitauri clearly didn't know such a figure existed on Earth. If they had, they probably wouldn't have dared invade today.
"Eric, let's deal with that first," Xu Dan said, pointing toward the Chitauri troops continuously pouring out of the portal in the sky.
They had just sent units to surround and suppress Xu Dan's side, only to be wiped out instantly—yet instead of retreating, they sent even more troops.
After all, losing a hundred or so soldiers meant nothing to them.
Magneto followed Xu Dan's gesture, a disdainful smile curling at the corner of his mouth.
Aircraft?
A torrent of steel?
Excuse me.
Crack—!
The sound of metal twisting echoed through the sky. Many Chitauri had no time to escape and were swept up with their aircraft, crushed into scrap by contorting steel.
Those who leapt from the craft in panic fared no better.
Falling straight down from hundreds of meters in the air, their deaths were likely even more miserable.
"Boy," Magneto asked casually as he ravaged the Chitauri forces, "when you told me about this, you already anticipated today, didn't you?"
Xu Dan nodded openly. Such a scene had already played out in his mind.
Using Magneto's power had always been part of his plan.
"Eric, I think you're planning to drag their entire fleet down."
Xu Dan was perhaps the person in the world who understood Magneto's abilities better than anyone—even better than Eric himself.
His power wasn't simply magnetism, limited to attracting iron.
It was control over magnetic fields.
All magnetic fields.
And the upper limit of that control was unknown.
He could even move planets.
Of course, Xu Dan didn't know whether this version of Magneto still possessed such power.
After all, in this universe—who knew which universe it really was.
Magneto gazed at the massive hole in the sky, sighed lightly, and said, "Boy, are you trying to exhaust this old man and then inherit my Brotherhood of Mutants?"
"Yes. I promise to treat them well."
"You—"
"Just kidding. Are you capable or not?"
Impossible?
A man can never say he's incapable—especially not when challenged, even if he's old.
Magneto bristled slightly and said, "Watch carefully! I'll pull those dogs down right now! But are you certain about what comes next?"
Xu Dan smiled and nodded with confidence. To be honest, the battle so far was little more than a warm-up for him.
The real spectacle had yet to begin.
They still had to wait for the arrival of the Chitauri mothership.
That was what he had been preparing for.
"Don't worry. If Earth is destroyed, put it on my name."
Was that even something a human would say?
Tony suddenly felt terrified to be standing on the same side as Xu Dan.
For them, driving back the Chitauri and rebuilding defenses on Earth would already be more than enough.
But Xu Dan's ambition was far too great.
So great that it couldn't be contained by a single planet.
He was gambling with Earth itself.
If it were destroyed—if!
How casually he said it.
Tony felt that the gap between his current self and Xu Dan spanned more than a single dimension.
At that moment, Thor patted him on the shoulder."Relax, brother… I'm on Xu Dan's side too."
