"I swear, I really just made some common-sense mistakes in my understanding of Xu Dan. He only stepped on a big fish to death, and I made a huge fuss over it. My insight really was too shallow!"A member of the Mutant Brotherhood laughed at himself, then felt a wave of weakness and slumped to the side.
Mutant abilities could indeed be unleashed without money—but they consumed physical or mental energy.
The strength levels within their group were uneven. Being able to hold the line and charge madly against the enemy forces for so long had already drained them to the limit. Some had even collapsed outright.
"Brothers, I think we can be considered heroes now. If not heroes, then at least the warriors behind that hero, right?"
"Yeah… I feel strangely cheerful. We're clearly in the middle of a battle, and we're exhausted…"
"This must be what it feels like to do something good!"
"I think it was Mr. Xu Dan who gave me the motivation! He was just so cool out there!"
"Everyone, keep fighting! Win this battle and drive out these alien mad dogs!"
...
Xu Dan's battle was actually only the beginning.
Even with what he had just dealt with, the thousands of Chitauri troops that had appeared on Earth were merely the tip of the iceberg.
Inside that massive hole in the sky lay the true alien army.
They had come to invade Earth. Naturally, they wouldn't bring only a few thousand troops. Even with confidence in their combat power, this was an assault on a civilization. Without an army of hundreds of thousands, how could one even speak of an interstellar invasion?
One could imagine how terrifying the numbers hidden behind that portal truly were.
"Xu Dan!" At that moment, Tony suddenly flew over. His new armor was covered in damage and debris, clearly showing signs of fierce combat. "We have to close that hole!"
Thor, standing nearby, nodded solemnly. For the first time, he looked seriously at this armored Earthling. "Yes. These are the Chitauri. Their numbers… are enormous."
At the same time, Black Widow's voice came through the earpiece."Tony, I'm on it! Dr. Selvig has regained consciousness, but the device has a protective shield—it can't be shut down!"
"What? Even that thing can't be turned off?" Tony's anger flared. "Then I'll go up there and blow it to pieces!"
He had been fighting fires in the sky all this time, and now he was being told the fire couldn't be put out. How could that not make him furious?
Black Widow replied quickly, "The doctor says there's a failsafe. Loki's scepter is required to close it!"
"Loki's scepter…" Tony turned his gaze back to Xu Dan. "Dan, we have to use Loki's scepter to close that portal in the sky!"
Hearing this, Xu Dan had no intention of handing the scepter over.
It had originally belonged to Loki, yes—but Loki had started the war, and Xu Dan had won the battle. That made the scepter his spoils of war.
Its ownership—and its use—were now in his hands.
"That portal will be closed," Xu Dan said calmly.
Tony hurried forward. "Then I'll take you up there. Let's close it!"
Xu Dan refused the offer."It will be closed—but not now."
"What?"
That single word echoed through Tony's earpiece, sending a ripple of confusion through the Avengers' communications.
The Chitauri army was pouring out like a hornet's nest, endlessly marching toward Earth, while the combat power on the ground was severely limited.
The fighters here weren't conventional armies. Traditional military engagements could drag on over time.
But most of the people fighting now were burning through massive amounts of physical strength—using superpowers or relying on sheer hand-to-hand combat. They simply couldn't afford a prolonged war.
Xu Dan shook his head, calm and composed, and slowly lifted his gaze toward the dark, abyssal hole in the sky.
It was as if his eyes could pierce through the space gate and see the evil lurking beyond.
"They've already invaded Earth. Are we really only thinking about how to drive them out?"
The moment those words were spoken, the battlefield fell silent.
The sharper minds had already guessed what Xu Dan intended to do—but was that really possible?
Did Earth truly have that kind of strength?
"If you think that simply expelling these sinners means our planet has won, then I have nothing more to say."
"This…"
Thor twirled Mjolnir and raised his chin toward Xu Dan."Friend, I'll follow you. I'm willing to join you!"Just thinking about such a battle made his blood boil.

Aboard the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier.
Nick Fury was in the middle of an emergency video conference.
"We've decided to use a nuclear weapon."The high command unanimously approved the directive.
The closest vessel to New York was their helicarrier—and it carried a nuclear warhead. That meant Nick Fury himself would be the one to send New York into the sky.
"No!" Fury roared. "Cancel the nuclear strike! You know our soldiers are still fighting in New York, and civilians haven't fully evacuated! Do you want to turn it into a wasteland?!"
"This is an order," one of the officials said coldly.
Nick Fury wanted nothing more than to walk up to those people and put a bullet in each of them.
The situation in New York clearly favored humanity. But even if it didn't, there were still countless troops on the ground!
And now they wanted to deploy nuclear weapons?!
Was this what it meant to have your brain planted in a rice field?
"You—!" Fury cursed and cut off the transmission immediately.
He turned to Agent Hill."Hill, don't allow any aircraft to take off. Do it now. Fast!"
"Yes, sir!"
But the moment the words left his mouth, alarms blared in the command module.
A technician shouted in panic, "Sir! A jet is taking off!"
"Mother—!"
Without hesitation, Nick Fury charged out of the command room, an anti-tank rocket launcher in his hands, sprinting toward the deck.
Whoosh—
The rocket left a blazing trail and struck the fighter dead-on!
Boom!!
Nick Fury didn't care who he had just killed. At least he felt relieved.
Better to kill one person than hundreds of thousands.
But in the next second, another deafening roar echoed across the deck—the sound of engines igniting.
Nick Fury's heart sank.
Another fighter had been activated.
These people…!
Reloading the launcher took time. There was no time left.
In desperation, Nick Fury drew his pistol and fired wildly.
But even hitting the aircraft only left tiny white marks.
After a brief taxi, the fighter lifted off into the air.
Nick Fury collapsed to the ground, utterly drained, as though the entire world had turned gray.
