Chapter 7 — Awakening of Devit
How many houses do I really need to build for them? Maybe one large house would be better than many small ones.
Alright, first things first — I need to gather materials. I'll bring wood from the forest and get tools from the market.
There are thirty of them, and apparently, they had companions too. At first, their group had two hundred members, but they got separated... and captured. Fifteen of them are adults, the rest are children. The king won't help them — he'll either banish them or call them enemies.
sigh I guess I'll need the System's help again.
---
System: New mission available.
"What now? If it's like the previous mission, I don't have time. I need to build houses — leave me alone."
System: This time it's different. You must find all the Elves and help them. With their aid, you can one day build your own imperfect kingdom.
"I'm not interested in creating kingdoms... but I'll help them as much as I can."
System: Mission already started. Progress — 30 out of 500. You must still help 470 Elves. A special reward awaits. All of them are in this forest. I hope you'll save them.
"Fine. Then instead of many small houses, I'll build one that can hold five hundred Elves."
System: Berserk mode activated. Permission granted. You can use 100% of your strength for three hours. Warning: You won't be able to use many of your abilities afterward.
"Alright… let's begin."
---
System: One day, unexpected events will await you. But until then, I hope you can build your kingdom in this world.
"Oh… ahh… done! Well, not completely. The house interior still needs work — and I still need to visit the market."
---
The Elves approached me carefully.
"Can we help you?" one asked.
"We can work too, if you bring us the materials."
"Alright," I said, "I'll get everything now — and I'll find your friends."
"Really?" another said. "You'll save our families too?"
"Yes. All of you. Where did you get separated?"
"We were in the middle of the forest," one explained. "A thick fog appeared, and then… everyone was gone."
"I see. You can finish things here, right? I'll find the others."
"Yes, we'll manage," they said.
"Good. Then I'm off."
---
The forest's center was far — too far. And the creatures were getting stronger.
"Who's there? Come out!" I called.
"If you're Elves, don't be afraid. I came to help."
A trembling voice replied, "We're here — a hundred of us. We don't know where the others are. Please… help us."
"I will."
Then a harsh growl cut through the air.
"Human! What are you doing here? Hand them over or die!"
"Help us! Please!" the Elves cried. "Save us from him!"
I turned toward the shadow. "And who are you supposed to be, monster?"
---
System: Special mission — Eliminate the demons capturing Elves in this forest. Reward: 1000 points. Mission started.
"Perfect timing," I muttered. "Let's end this quickly."
The demon laughed. "You think you can kill me? Hahaha!"
Moments later, he was gone — sliced clean. "One down," I said. "Let's move."
More came — over a thousand. They weren't strong, just many.
But their leader… I hadn't found him yet.
By the time the sun shifted, I'd saved two hundred thirty Elves. Only a hundred seventy remained.
---
I stopped. Something felt wrong.
"This place… it's their base."
Damn it — they'd taken Elves captive. "System, do you have sleeping gas?"
System: Yes, but it only works on low-tier monsters, not elite demons.
"Fine. There are about five strong ones here, including a leader. That's enough to make it fun."
I smirked. "Let's begin."
Most fell asleep. Five remained awake.
"Hello, cursed demons," I said, stepping from the shadows. "The war's over. What are you still doing?"
"Who are you, human?"
"Just a traveler passing by," I replied. "But it seems you've taken Elves as slaves."
"Not your business. Leave — or die."
"I'll pass," I said. "Let's get this over with. My children are waiting."
"What did you say—?!"
Steel clashed.
"One down. Four to go."
"Kill him!" they screamed.
"Three down… two left."
"Next!"
"Come here yourself, coward."
---
One demon grinned. "You're interesting, human. Before I kill you — your name?"
"David," I said. "And yours?"
"I am Yago — one of the Demon King's ten generals. You'll die here."
"Then let's see."
We clashed — each strike shaking the ground. My blows barely hurt him.
"You're strong," he said, "but not on my level. If you were, this fight would be fun. Now die."
"Not yet. System, allocate all points to Strength, Speed, and Endurance — now!"
System:
Strength: 3000
Speed: 3500
Endurance: 5000
All points used.
"Alright, Yago," I said. "How's this?"
He narrowed his eyes. "What… your power—?! Fine! Then I'll fight with everything I have!"
We charged — light and shadow colliding.
"Yago, you're not bad," I said, panting. "But I have Elves to save."
"Berserk mode — activate!"
System: Berserk mode activated.
"Aaaaaaa—!"
"What's happening? His power's rising even more!" Yago gasped. "I can't… I can't win. I'll retreat for now, David. But we'll fight again!"
And then — silence.
---
I fell to one knee. "If we'd been equal in strength, he might have won," I thought. "But it's over."
Pain surged through my body. "Just… make it home…"
I staggered back to the camp.
The Elves had finished the house.
"I'm back," I said weakly. "I brought your families."
---
System: Mission complete. Reward: 5000 points. You also receive a demon-slaying weapon of your choice.
"System, heal me — now."
System: Severe injuries detected. Healing will cost 1000 points.
"I accept."
System: Healing complete.
---
I exhaled deeply. "I'm exhausted. Talk to you all tomorrow. Feed the children. I need to rest."
The world faded as I collapsed on the floor.
Tomorrow… I'd begin again.
