Chapter 19: Songs Behind Bars
The heavy iron doors of the Port Royal prison slammed shut behind them with a final, echoing thud. The stench of damp stone and saltwater filled the air, mixing with the faint sounds of the bustling town outside. The cell was cramped, dark, and cold—a far cry from the freedom of the sea.
Jake, Elias, and Raina were thrown inside like common criminals, chains clinking around their wrists and ankles. The guards locked the iron door and turned away, confident they had secured three dangerous pirates.
But inside the cell, the mood was anything but grim.
Jake stretched his arms, the metal cuffs cold against his skin, then flashed a roguish grin at Elias.
"Well," Jake said, "looks like we're stuck here for a while. Might as well make the best of it."
Elias raised an eyebrow, a sly smile tugging at his lips.
"Best of it?" he echoed, then suddenly burst into a low, gravelly tune.
From somewhere deep within him came the first lines of an old pirate song—a haunting melody filled with reckless adventure and sea-faring freedom.
Jake caught the rhythm instantly, joining in with a hearty, booming voice that echoed off the stone walls.
"Yo-ho, yo-ho, a pirate's life for me!
We sail the seas and drink the rum, wild and free..."
Raina, despite the chains and the grim situation, couldn't help but smile. She clapped along and sang the next verse softly.
"Through storms and cannon fire, we laugh and fight,
No jail can hold us, no dark can smite..."
Their voices grew louder, filling the small cell with laughter and song. For a moment, they were no longer prisoners — they were pirates, free on the open sea, the wind in their hair, the taste of salt on their lips.
Jake threw his head back and laughed.
"Let them think we're beaten. We've got a day, maybe two, but we'll die with a song in our hearts and a grin on our faces."
Elias nodded, wiping a bead of blood from his lip, still smiling.
"Let the guards think we're scared. Pirates don't go down quietly."
As Jake and Elias kept singing, the sound traveled beyond their cell walls. The entire prison began to listen—old prisoners, thieves, smugglers, and even some of the grizzled guards paused to hear the song.
Slowly, one prisoner began to hum along, then another. The melody spread like wildfire through the corridors. Soon, voices of hardened criminals, desperate men, and forgotten souls joined in the chorus.
The old men sang with memories of better days. The young thieves raised their voices with reckless joy. Even the guards at their posts found themselves humming, caught by the infectious spirit.
The sound grew louder, stronger—bursting out into the courtyard, echoing through the stone halls, and spilling into the streets of Port Royal.
A beautiful, wild chorus of pirates and prisoners united in song.
"Yo-ho, yo-ho, a pirate's life for me!
We sail the seas and drink the rum, wild and free...
Through storms and cannon fire, we laugh and fight,
No jail can hold us, no dark can smite..."
The singing carried on well into the night, a loud, proud anthem of freedom and defiance that could be heard across the town.
And inside the cell, Jake, Elias, and Raina smiled, knowing that even behind bars, the pirate spirit was alive and unstoppable.
