Chapter 18: The Battle at Port Royal
The Black Pearl came into view, a haunting silhouette against the orange sky. The ship's sails snapped in the wind as it anchored just outside the bustling docks of Port Royal. The morning was still young, the sun barely climbing over the horizon, but the ship had arrived in full force.
Jake stood at the helm, his fingers loosely gripping the wheel as his eyes scanned the shore. He had come to drop off Will and Elizabeth—no more, no less. He was ready to leave, to vanish back into the winds, away from the island and the chaos that had followed him for so long.
But it didn't happen like that.
The moment the Black Pearl dropped anchor near the harbor, the town seemed to come alive. Guards poured out from every corner of the city like ants stirred from their nests. The docks were swarming with soldiers, swords drawn, muskets ready. There was no welcome, no celebration of the ship's return—just an immediate threat.
Elias leaned against the railing, looking out at the gathering guards with an amused smirk on his face.
"Well, well, well," he said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "Now that's a welcome party I can get behind."
Jake glanced over at him, his face hardening. "Not quite what I had in mind."
Will and Elizabeth stood a few paces away, eyes wide. They weren't pirates—not like the others. Will had spent much of his life as a blacksmith . Elizabeth, though a daughter of the governor, had been caught up in the pirate world out of love, not desire. Both of them had their roles in the world, but neither were prepared for what was happening now.
"What should we do?" Will asked, looking nervously at Jake.
Jake didn't answer immediately. Instead, he kept his focus on the shore, his gaze cold and calculating.
"They're expecting us to run," Jake said quietly, his lips curling into a grin. "But let's disappoint them."
The tension thickened as Jake stepped away from the helm. Elias, ever the chaotic force, was already on the move. He cracked his neck and straightened his coat, eager for a good fight.
"I'm bored," Elias muttered to no one in particular. "Let's liven things up."
Before Jake could even take another step, the first shot rang out. The crack of the musket's discharge split the air, and the bullet flew through the air, aiming straight for Jake's chest. He didn't even flinch—he was used to this by now. But the bullet never reached its target.
Elias moved faster than anyone could track. In the blink of an eye, he had shifted his body between Jake and the incoming bullet. With a swift motion, he extended his hand, and the bullet struck his arm instead of Jake's stomach. He staggered slightly, but a dark grin spread across his face.
"Missed me," Elias said, looking down at the blood trickling from his arm. "Nice try."
The guards stood stunned for a moment, unsure of what they had just seen. Jake wasted no time. He leaped off the deck of the Black Pearl, pulling his sword from its sheath as he landed on the dock. The soldiers who had gathered were momentarily distracted, trying to comprehend the speed and skill of the pirates.
"Attack!" one of the guards shouted, and chaos erupted.
Jake's sword cleaved through the first man's chest, the blade gleaming with deadly precision. He moved through the guards with quick, efficient strikes, cutting through the sea of soldiers like a storm through calm waters.
Behind him, Elias and Raina followed suit. Elias drew his own sword, the black blade flashing as he struck down a guard with a single slash. His movements were wild, chaotic, like a madman on a rampage. He was everywhere—slicing, slashing, taking down anyone who got too close. His laughter filled the air as he moved through the fray.
"You should've stayed inside, mate," Elias taunted a soldier, knocking him off balance and sending him tumbling into the water. "This is going to hurt."
Raina was not far behind. Her twin blades danced through the air, cutting through flesh with lethal grace. She wasn't as chaotic as Elias, but her style was just as deadly. She moved with purpose, each strike calculated, leaving no room for mercy.
Will and Elizabeth remained where they were, frozen in shock. They could hear the clash of steel, the shouts of men, the cries of pain—but they didn't move. They knew what would happen if they stepped in. If they fought, they would be pirates, and Port Royal would never forgive them.
Elias looked over at them as he cut down another soldier. His eyes narrowed, and he flashed them a quick grin.
"Do nothing," Elias called out to Will and Elizabeth. "If you join in, you're pirates now. And trust me, you don't want that."
Will hesitated, but Elizabeth grabbed his arm. "Elias is right," she said, her voice tight with fear. "We can't get involved. If we do, there's no going back."
The fight raged on. Jake was relentless, moving through the guards like a force of nature. Elias was the same, each movement more erratic, more savage than the last. The dock was a bloody mess, bodies piling up as the soldiers tried desperately to hold their ground.
But the guards were outmatched. The pirates were too fast, too skilled. Elias and Jake were like ghosts—appearing one moment, vanishing the next. Raina, ever the deadly shadow, cleared a path through the guards, dispatching anyone who dared cross her path.
However, the overwhelming numbers began to take their toll. The guards, though weaker, were many. Slowly but surely, they began to wear down the pirates. Elias took another blow to the side, but he didn't stop. He fought through the pain, his eyes wild with excitement. Jake, too, was bleeding from a wound on his arm, but he fought with the same determination that had carried him through countless battles before.
But despite their skill, the odds were against them. The guards, reinforced by even more soldiers from the town, began to surround them. Slowly, step by step, they closed in.
Raina fought furiously, but even she couldn't keep up with the number of soldiers now swarming around them. Elias's movements grew slower, more sluggish, as the fatigue of battle started to take its toll. Jake, too, was starting to falter. He had fought in worse battles, but this was different. This was Port Royal.
As the final moments of the battle drew near, Jake took a step back, blood dripping from his body. Elias, breathing heavily, caught his eye.
"We're not getting out of this, are we?" Elias asked, a smile creeping onto his face despite the situation.
Jake nodded grimly. "Not this time."
Before they could make another move, a group of guards lunged forward, overwhelming them. With a final effort, the pirates fought back, but it was no use. The guards, bolstered by reinforcements, captured them one by one.
Elias, Jake, and Raina were forced to the ground, their swords kicked away, their arms bound tightly. The sound of the chains rattling was a harsh contrast to the quiet that had followed the fight.
Will and Elizabeth stood at the edge of the chaos, silent and still, watching the pirates be captured.
Jake looked up at them, his eyes tired but defiant.
"Well," he said with a crooked grin, "looks like we're in for a long day."
