Chapter 34: Jiang Nannan
One year later.
On a desolate patch of land outside Heaven Dou City, two figures stood facing each other. Besides Huo Yuhao, there were still a dozen or so enormous craters, each radiating a staggering amount of heat.
Observing Huo Yuhao, who could barely stand upright, Gu Yuena extended her delicate, pink tongue and lightly licked the ice pop in her hand, still exuding cold mist. The sweet and icy sensation spread across her tongue, and her beautiful eyes narrowed slightly. She asked softly,
"Do you want to continue?"
Huo Yuhao drew a deep breath. The Eye of Destiny on his forehead flickered uncertainly between brightness and dimness. Slowly, he raised the White Tiger Dagger in his hand and gently closed his eyes.
"Once more," he said.
Gu Yuena did not speak further. Her silver-glimmering staff twirled lightly in her hand, and a massive fireball, nearly half a meter in diameter, materialized from thin air, hurtling toward Huo Yuhao at astonishing speed.
Even with his eyes closed, Huo Yuhao could, through his Spirit Detection, meticulously observe the fireball. Yet, what appeared in his mind was an entirely different scene.
The blazing orange-red fireball, and even the entire world around it, became hazy and gray. As Huo Yuhao's spirit force was drained at a frightening rate, vivid, bright cracks finally began to appear on the fireball.
In an instant, Huo Yuhao moved. He took two rapid steps forward and, with no defense whatsoever, thrust the White Tiger Dagger straight into the fireball, as if completely indifferent to the searing heat it emitted.
A strange phenomenon occurred. The fireball, which had radiated terrifying heat just a moment ago, shattered the instant the dagger pierced it, vanishing as if it had never existed. Even the scorching waves that had distorted the air disappeared without a trace.
Seeing this, a hint of joy surfaced on Huo Yuhao's face. After countless attempts, he had finally succeeded.
The stinging pain that surged through him caused his vision to darken, and he ended up sprawled on the ground, staring up at the sky as he gasped for air.
As footsteps drew near, the sight of a pristine white skirt entered Huo Yuhao's vision, accompanied by a faint fragrance reminiscent of an orchid.
"Incredible ability,"
came a clear, ethereal voice. Gu Yuena lifted the hem of her dress slightly, crouching down to reveal her long, fair legs beneath the flowing fabric, elegantly straight and graceful.
Looking at Huo Yuhao, who resembled a flopped fish, she could not resist teasingly poking his cheek with her slender fingers.
Huo Yuhao's lips twitched at Gu Yuena's comment, the joy within him barely contained.
"Well, it was bought with a life… It had better be impressive. Not easy at all—finally, it worked."
With Gu Yuena's guidance over the past year, his proficiency with the Death Descent skill had advanced at an astonishing rate. Several months ago, Huo Yuhao had already realized that the ability could affect not only living beings but all forms of energy. This meant he could entirely neutralize incoming attacks using this skill.
However, since observing the cracks required intense focus for a period of time, it was difficult to employ it in the midst of rapidly changing battles. Therefore, in the ensuing months, he had continuously trained to minimize that observation window.
And just now… he had finally managed to wield it, albeit barely, during high-speed combat.
Gu Yuena pursed her lips, glancing at the sun setting behind the western hills. She spoke softly,
"Dinner time is approaching. Didn't you say we need to stop by the medical hall later?"
"Oh, right," Huo Yuhao realized, almost forgetting the errand. Feeling the aching strain in his limbs, he swallowed and forced an awkward smile.
"Cough… we might have to wait a bit."
Gu Yuena said nothing, instead offering the ice pop in her hand to Huo Yuhao.
"Want some?"
"Huh?"
Huo Yuhao froze as he saw the ice pop still glistening with crystalline frost. Before he could react, it was already pressed to his lips.
"You look like you're very thirsty."
The subtle fragrance mingled with the sweet chill as the icy flavor spread through his mouth. Instinctively, Huo Yuhao took a small lick and immediately felt much of his bodily fatigue ease.
"Cough… thanks," he murmured.
At this point, he decided it was better to focus on the ice pop first.
"No need to thank me—you bought it yourself."
One hour later.
The two returned to the medical hall. Three years had passed since Huo Yuhao first arrived in Heaven Dou City. Both he and Huo Yun'er had seen significant improvements in their physical conditions, and their medicine purchases had gradually decreased in frequency.
As they entered, the middle-aged man who had once attended to Huo Yuhao immediately approached. First, he glanced at Gu Yuena, then shot an ambiguous, almost teasing look at Huo Yuhao, secretly giving him a thumbs-up from within his sleeve.
"Good kid! Every time you come, it's never the same!"
"Nice to see you again, young master."
Huo Yuhao's eyelid twitched as he pretended not to notice the gesture, passing the list of required herbs to the man.
"These are the herbs I need this time."
Unlike previous treatments for hidden injuries, these herbs were primarily for general health maintenance. The man scanned the list briefly, then raised his gaze toward Huo Yuhao, deepening his respect for the boy's understanding of medical principles.
"All available in the pharmacy. I'll fetch them for you," he said.
While Huo Yuhao and Gu Yuena waited, exchanging glances, a commotion came from the entrance.
Huo Yuhao instinctively turned to see a panicked young girl rushing in. After glancing around, she intercepted an apprentice, her voice urgent.
"Hello, where is my mother right now?"
The girl's attire was plain, yet her features were exquisite. Her brows arched like distant mountains, her eyes were serene like spring waters, and her long, dark purple hair flowed like waves. Though young in appearance, her figure was tall and graceful, her long legs unmistakable even beneath trousers.
The apprentice, momentarily stunned, recognized her identity and said while turning to lead her,
"You're Jiang Nannan, right? Please follow me."
"You know her?"
Gu Yuena's voice sounded in Huo Yuhao's ear. He nodded slightly.
"Kind of… though she probably doesn't know me."
He kept his gaze on Jiang Nannan's retreating figure, curiosity evident in his tone.
"But what is she doing here?"
"It's her mother—she's having some heart problems."
Huo Yuhao followed the apprentice's lead with his eyes. The middle-aged man who had just fetched herbs approached, but his gaze lingered on Jiang Nannan's departing figure. He sighed lightly.
"She was brought here by her daughter a year ago. The case was complex. Many of our doctors examined her, but they were helpless. We could only focus on symptom relief."
He paused briefly, then looked at Huo Yuhao.
"I see you have some medical knowledge, young master. Would you like to help take a look?"
