Chapter 18 - The beginning

After talking in the room the party headed to the western wall. Darkness greeted them as they left the inn. The night was anything but tranquil though. A clamor rang through the city, especially in the western district. Both players and NPCs were prepping cor the upcoming invasion.

The city guard patrolled the hectic streets providing a sense of security to the average citizen. The players however held no fear, they only looked foward to the unexpected event. All of them wore looks of anticipation as they prepared equipment and grouped into respective parties.

"City sure is lively. The people must be scared."

Jasmine looked into the streets filled with bustling crowds. People gathering their loved ones, saying goodbye to someone before heading to shelter, crying children scared of what could happen. Scenes of fear and creeping dread filled the western district.

"An undead invasion will do that to the average person."

As they headed toward the wall the scenery changed. Instead of panicked people fleeing to shelter the streets were now filled with not only soldiers but players. Looks of determimation and anticipation were all pointed in one direction, west.

Finally arriving at the wall a gruff voice greeted the party.

"Ty! And Ian too, you guys joining the fight?"

It was Bryan the capitan of the guard, a friend of Ty's.

"You bet Bryan! We're gonna demolish those skeletons!"

Ty flexed his arms with confidence, his eyes eager for a good battle.

"You think you can give us a picture of the situation right now? What's been happening? Do you guys have a plan at all?"

Ian looked at Bryan with a serious expression. He needed information to make a plan.

"Well for one we fortified the wall and set up cannons and magic cannons on top. Archers are on standby on the wall as well. Soldiers will be positioned in the evacuated western district in case they break through. Apart from that it's just slaughtering skeletons. How hard can that be?"

"Hahaha! You're right!"

Ty laughed at his assessment. Skeletons were mob monsters no matter what unless it was a lich or something.

"Not that I'm not taking this seriously though. It's my duty to protect this city and that's something I hold dear. Speaking of, come with me. The lord wishes to see you."

Bryan led them toward the command center, a tent hastily set up just under the western wall. Inside many people were waiting, including other players. Names lined Ian's vision.

[Ember Sawada] a tall woman with black hair. Her red glasses glinted as she looked over to the entrance. Long gloves covered her hands all the way to her upper arm. Golden rings lined the black leather in the arm portion with simple gold accents on her hands. A simple red sleeveless kimono with gold accents reached to her calves.

[Desmond Auditore] a black fox beast man. He wore a gray cloak with some flexible leather armor over it. Comfortable dark trousers, seemingly customized to have a lot of pockets covered his legs. He didn't have any weapons on him except the crossbow on his back and only leaned against the wall.

[Morgan Waron] a dwarven knight. Covered head to toe in dark armor, she didn't have many noteworthy features. A blood-red cloak covered her shoulders and a black spear two heads taller than her sat next to her. One thing was different about her though, her power. Morgan was a silver level player, at least in this low level area she was very strong.

[Raiden Tempest] a shirtless half orc brawler. He wore bandages araound his forearms and hands. He had short black almost blue hair and a chiseled face. Small tusks showed in the corners of his mouth. Without them Ian wouldn't have been able to tell he was a half orc because he had a human complexion. A blue tribal tattoo resembling thunder covered his left chest.

Other than those players some NPCs were in the room as well. Across from Morgan was a wolf beastman. The man was dressed in simple priest robes with a shawl that glowed like moonlight. His ears were pierced with crystals and ornaments hanging from them. At the desk in the center of the room was the city lord.

The lord was a middle aged woman. She had a few gray streaks in her otherwise dark wavy hair. A luxurious gown lined her body, shiny ornaments and accessories blinded those who looked too close. The look wasn't tacky though, the woman pulled everything off with dignity.

"My lady"

Bryan bowed in front of her desk with a look of respect.

"Raise your head"

A clear voice rang through the room. The woman carried a sence of authority, a pressure forcing others to follow. The woman looked around the room before continuing.

"You all must be wondering why I've called for you."

The air in the room filled with anticipation. To the players this was a hidden quest, a bonus to a bonus. Being called here by the lord herself meant even bigger rewards for them if they succeed.

"The reason is simple. you 8 are the strongest in this city right now. At least among those not already in the guards. The city needs your help, with three silver level experts among you this should be no problem"

"Three?"

A small but strong voice echoed from dark armor.

"Yes, I am the third. Nice to meet you all. My name is Jericho, I'm a priest for the Moon Goddess Selena."

The wolf beastman spoke up at Morgan's question. As a priest his power came from faith so it wasn't detectable by the regular means. None of the players knew the method to detect divine power so he had seemed like a regular person until now.

"And what exactly do you expect us to do?"

Ian looked at the lord with a question. As his words hung in the air every player stopped talking and focused on the reply.

"Support us in this seige and when you find an opportunity break through and search for the mage who caused this. Bring his head back and a hefty reward is yours."
