Cherreads

Chapter 20 - Various Battles

Back on the wall Ian turned to the hidden quest recipients and Jericho, the priest NPC.

"It's time, we're not gonna get a better chance than this."

"So who's staying and who's going? I for one volunteer to stay. I want the gold!"

From the side, Ember spoke up. The other players perked up at this. They hadn't decided who got to leave and who had to stay.

"I'm staying too! I wanna fight that knight! Just leave it to me"

Ty spoke confidently while thumping on his chest.

"I'll back you up. I'm not the most useful against a mage. It's hard to get close and attack since I use my fists."

With that both Ty and Raiden jumped down the wall. Now that they had their part to play there was no point in hesitating.

"They'll need healing. I will accompany them down."

Jericho also hurried down the wall. Now only 4 people remained, Ian, Jasmine, Morgan, and Desmond.

"Let's start. Just give me a minute to find the guy."

Ian turned toward the forest before his eyes went white. Arrow, who was perched on a distant tree, quicly perked up and flew away.

"How long do you think it will take to find him?"

Jasmine stood next to Ian looking over the battle field.

"Not long I hope. Things might take a turn for the worse if we stall too long."

On the ground the situation wasn't lokking great. After the gates fell, the soldiers stationed on the ground struggled. The undead's number though smaller was still overwhelming. Soldiers desperately swung their swords at the deadly mob.

At the back of the undead army, the death knight stood tall. He looked over the battlefield like a calculating commander.

Laughter began echoing from above as the clash between life and death continued.

"HAHAHAHAHA!"

Ty was falling straight on top of the death knight with no fear. His eyes held a dangerous glint as he brandished his great sword. In a second Ty was clashing with the mounted skeleton.

Sparks flew in the air as Ty was pushed back.

'Just a bit stronger than me... I can do this!'

A look of firey determination appeared on Ty's face. He shot back at the skeleton, his sword shining with a reddish hue.

They clashed once more, this time it was noticeably more even that the first. Suddenly a figure rushed at them from the side, it was Raiden.

A fist covered in blue energy closed in on the death knight's head. The impact pushed the skeleton's head backwards for a second before it stabilized itself.

This momentary opening allowed Ty to finish his attack. The undead's black blade was pushed away and Ty's swing went through. Instead of attacking the knight though, Ty's attack decapitated it's undead horse.

"There now we're fighting on an even plane."

Ty had a grin on his face while backing away from the falling horse.

At the front of the mob Ember was cradling a fire in her hands. It grew and grew as she circled it with her palms. A bright orange glow spread around her arms as various magic circles and enchantments activated.

Her arms waved as the fire grew and spread before firing a wall of fire at the mob. Her fire spread and kept growing even outside her hands.

Quicly the front few skeletons turned to ashes as the fire began to dissipate. Ember quickly backed up and let the soldiers around her attack the weakened skeletons in the back. An attack of that size took a lot out of her as her level.

On top of the wall Ian finally saw something. In the forest, only a couple hundred feet from wall was Corvus. Hunched over in the darkness, the dark mage seemed to be focused on the battlefield with his jaw clenched. His fists shook as he yelled out.

"Go! That bastard can't do it alone! Destroy Canopy City!"

From the shadows an undead assassin dashed toward the wall. Ian could tell it was another silver rank monster. He quickly messaged the players who left the wall, warning them of the incoming danger.

"I found him but theres a problem. Another silver level undead is heading here as we speak."

"Then what are we waiting for? Let's go!"

Desmond put his hood up and began heading down. The rest followed behind him. The battlefield below was a hectic scene. Players were rampaging through the undead horde while soldiers held the line.

At the back of the undead horde there was a clearing. The street in that area was heavily damaged, cracks and scars lined the area. The fight between the death knight, Ty, and Raiden was really doind a number on their surroundings.

Ian and his group arrived at the ground floor when someone approached them. Bryan, leading a squad of soldiers, spoke up.

"Did you find him?"

"Yeah, now all that's left is going after him. We just need a way out."

"Just leave that to me and my men! We'll cover for you on your way out."

Bryan pointed at the men behind him with a smile.

"One problem though, another silver rank undead is coming."

"Don't worry about that extra stuff. As long as you kill that bastard this battle will end. We'll deal with the monsters."

Bryan left no room for argument and got his slodiers in formation arround them. They les the players to the gate fighting through a mob of skeletons. On occasion Ian shot a couple arrows in support but his main focus was getting out.

After 5 minutes of gruelingly slow movement the players reached the gate. The surrounding area was almost completely flattened. Houses had holes and the ground was scarred with marks of battle. Not too far from their group were Ty and Raiden locked in a deadly stalemate with the death knight.

Finally they left the city, now all that was left was finding the mage. Just as some guards were lowered, a knife came flying from the trees. In the blink of an eye one of the soldiers dropped dead. The silence was heavy with fear and tension.

Another knife shot out, this time targeting Morgan. With a turn of her head she casually dodged the knife and turned back to the attacker.

"Are you deadass? That's the best you could do?"

She raised her spear in one arm before letting it fly. At first it seemed like a regular throw but, the farther it went the faster it was.

It was as if the spear wasn't a spear but instead a homing missile. The assasin tried to dodge but the spear followed so it resorted to deflecting it as best as possible.

Sparks flew as the spear and daggers clashed constantly. The spear guided the undead toward the players as it attacked.

Bryan rushed toward the undead brandishing his sword.

"You guys leave! Go find the mage I will stall that skeleton."

His soldiers rushed up with him surrounding the undead assasin. With the formation set and the soldiers ready Morgan recalled her spear.

"Let's go y'all. We have a mage to kill."

Ian echoed her.

"She's right. The faster we kill the mage the faster the skeletons disappear. We can end this battle before more people get hurt."

With that in mind the players headed into the forest.
