#4843. Call for help
Gotham City's nights are always so oppressive, like a fish out of the water on the shore, with a gradually approaching sense of suffocation, yet every now and then a surge of water comes in, allowing you to continue to survive and breathe, but that surge of water is too small to pull you back into the water.
Jona is a resident of the Diamond District and a student at J.J. Carmody High School. It is already 9:30 p.m., but she still hasn't gone home. There is a reason for this, of course, because a classmate's prank made her go home so late.
Jona walked along the road. There was hardly anyone left on campus. As for the locked campus gates, that didn't pose a problem for her at all. She easily slipped through the gaps in the campus fence, after all, she was quite petite.
"If I run into Louis again tomorrow, I'm going to slap him twice. Oh, shit, he's a real bastard."
Jona said somewhat sullenly that it was entirely the other person's fault, yet they were blaming her. They had agreed to stay at school a little later for a thrilling and adventurous adventure, but the other person had lied to her and run away from school, leaving her waiting anxiously inside, thinking he would come over soon.
Until Jona saw the note slipped under the door, which contained the following message:
Oh, dear Jona, forgive me for leaving without saying goodbye—no, no, I should say without farewell. Guess why I did it? You'll have to figure that out yourself. Who told you to eat my expensive pastries? Those were the ones my mother specially bought for me from abroad, and you ate them before I even had a bite! Okay, those are just excuses. It's just that you tattled on me to the teacher during the last exam, which really annoyed me. So, please let me get my revenge on you, let you taste the feeling of loneliness and fear, Jona… your dear Louise!
This was a completely cold and cynical joke, and Jona was extremely annoyed. She hadn't even complained about the last exam, so who was misunderstanding her? Or was someone trying to sow discord between her and Louis?
Several faces of women she disliked flashed through Jona's mind. Who could it be? Could it be Selena? Was she deliberately trying to sow discord between her and Louise?
This is probably another conflict between women, or perhaps it's due to jealousy and rivalry.
What young girl doesn't dream of love? Jona also has a crush on a guy named Louis.
Although she was furious, Jona had no choice but to explain to Louis tomorrow. She walked along the forest path filled with lush foliage, a shortcut that would get her home faster. It was so late now, and she was sure to get scolded no matter when she went home. The difference was whether she would get a light scolding or a severe beating.
Jona chose the former. Her father was known for his heavy-handedness. She still remembered the last time she was beaten for something, her buttocks felt like they were burning red shrimp, so painful that she could barely sit down.
Even at school, people would laugh at her, saying: "Oh, Jona, where did you learn Chinese kung fu? Have you been to that Chinese kung fu dojo on the corner? Did you learn anything like nunchaku?"
Joe didn't want to put up with those jerks' teasing.
The shortcut Jona took led to Grant Park. Normally, there would be people chatting and taking walks in the park at this time, but due to recent events, fewer and fewer people were out at night. Even her father told her to go home early after class.
Going home this late tonight will definitely get me a beating.
It's all Louis's fault.
Speaking of Louis, he got back half an hour earlier than me, so he should be home by now.
Their homes weren't far apart, and they could be considered childhood sweethearts.
A gust of cold wind blew by, making Jona shiver. It was really cold that night, especially in the park. The wind was blowing so hard that the trees were rustling and making it feel eerie.
Jona was suddenly surprised to find that there were suddenly many red balloons in the park. She had walked through the park yesterday and had not noticed these balloons. What was going on? Didn't the sanitation workers notice them?
From Jona's perspective, many red balloons were piled up and hanging among the branches of the trees in the park, with white strings hanging down with gravity.
Jona didn't pay much attention, thinking it was just someone's prank. But after Jona walked down the road, the red balloons suddenly spun around. On the red balloons that spun around were some drawings, the shape of a human face. The eyes of the drawn face were strangely moving, and they were staring at Jona's departing figure.
This scene appears extremely eerie, even more terrifying than some scenes in ghost movies.
However, Jona didn't realize this. She was eager to get home as soon as possible, hoping to avoid being beaten by her strict father.
"What's going on today? Why haven't we left the park yet?"
Jona was immediately puzzled. She had walked through this park countless times before, and should have already left by now. Yet, she was still on the park's forest path, her feet treading on pebbles. Yes, that's right, this was the park's most famous pebble path, where many people used to stroll.
Suddenly, Jona's pupils changed. She actually saw Louis's clothes hanging in the bushes next to her. What was going on? How could Louis's clothes be here? Didn't he already go back?
Jona took off Louis's clothes and found that they were terribly torn, as if they had been pierced by something.
Jona's doubts grew, and she vaguely heard a familiar voice calling out nearby, and it continued for a long time.
"Hey! Jona... help me... Jona..."
The more she listened to the voice, the more familiar it became. Finally, she recognized the owner of the voice—it was Louis's voice! What happened to him? Why was he calling for help? Wasn't he home? Why was he here?
Completely baffled, Jona had no other choice but to go find Louis's location, following the direction of the sound.
