Chapter 76 - Subway Battle

At the intersection, behind the abandoned vehicles in the center, Wang Zhi and the other five leaned against the car doors, refilling their spare magazines. The bone-chilling, biting wind had already caused them to shiver slightly.

"How much further do we have to go?" Old He asked.

Wang Zhi located their position on the map, "From here... to Z Hospital... is about 15 kilometers..."

"H-how far? Fifteen kilometers? Are you sure you read that right?" Fatty panicked slightly, quickly moving closer to look at the map.

Wang Zhi stared at the map, lost in thought.

"Fifteen kilometers is indeed a bit far, and that's just the straight-line distance," Zhang Ming said, looking at the map.

"How about we take the subway station?" Wang Zhi suddenly spoke up.

"The subway station? What for?" Old He asked.

"Look, from our current location, the next intersection is the entrance to the subway station. The exit for the next stop in that subway tunnel is right near Z Hospital. We only need to traverse one stop in the tunnel," Wang Zhi pointed at the map.

"No! There will only be more Zombies in the subway station; going there is too risky," Su Muying objected.

"It's still better than walking on the surface streets. We've already used nearly 300 rounds just crossing this one block. We can't afford a war of attrition at every intersection," Wang Zhi argued.

"Let's go through the subway station. If it doesn't work out, we can pull back," Old He agreed with Wang Zhi's idea.

Seeing that everyone else agreed, Su Muying had no choice but to acquiesce. After reloading their magazines, the six of them got up and stealthily moved toward the next intersection.

Having learned their lesson from before, this time none of them rushed to use firearms, instead sticking close to the walls and using melee weapons to dispatch the Zombies.

This time, they did not attract too many Zombies; Captain Wang and the five others successfully reached the subway station entrance.

The area beneath the entrance was pitch black, so Captain Wang and the five others activated their night vision goggles in advance.

Upon entering the subway station, a stench of blood washed over them. The walls and steps were covered in dried, brown bloodstains, and public facilities had been destroyed, indicating a fierce battle had taken place here previously.

Captain Wang cautiously descended the steps. As soon as he saw the subway hall, the sight before him made his scalp tingle!

Right at the bottom of the stairs, a dense swarm of Zombies was blocking the way, emitting continuous low growls from within the horde.

Captain Wang immediately stopped, took out a High-Explosive Grenade from his waist, and shook it at the others behind him. The five understood and also pulled out High-Explosive Grenades, keeping them ready at their waists for immediate use.

Captain Wang pulled the pin on the grenade and threw it downward. Finally, they struck first this time. As the High-Explosive Grenade landed, the group of Zombies below immediately surged forward.

Boom!

With a loud explosion, a small mushroom cloud appeared in the darkness, blasting the charging Zombies into pieces.

However, the gap Captain Wang created was quickly filled by the surging Zombies.

"Open fire!" Captain Wang shouted.

They currently held the high ground, occupying an excellent geographical advantage, but this soon turned into a disadvantage.

"Not good, Captain Wang, Zombies are coming from above us too!"

Zhang Ming's voice came over the radio.

Captain Wang looked back, and sure enough! Zombies were constantly pouring in from the entrance above the stairs—this was bad! Captain Wang had to choose a direction to break through; being pinned down by enemies on both sides of the stairs would lead to their demise.

"Throw grenades! Break through downwards!" Captain Wang immediately decided to push downward. Since they had already reached this point, retreating to the ground level was meaningless!

Hearing the order to break through downwards, everyone threw the hand grenades they had prepared beforehand down below.

Boom, boom, boom! Several grenades exploded, shaking the tunnel and kicking up dust. After the blasts subsided, taking advantage of the gap in the Zombies not yet being sealed, Captain Wang immediately charged down!

There was no time to change magazines; Captain Wang wielded his two Daggers, his target clear: charging through the security check area.

The security check area had roadblocks set up, which could temporarily hold back the Zombies. As long as they reached that point, Captain Wang and the others would have a chance to catch their breath.

Su Muying, gripping Fentian, then overtook Captain Wang ahead of her, charging out in the lead. With phantom-like footwork, she weaved through the Zombies, making it impossible for Captain Wang to see her position; he could only see the Zombies continuously falling.

Fatty's submachine gun also played a crucial role at this moment, unleashing a barrage of indiscriminate fire at the Zombies ahead. This caused Captain Wang to break out in a cold sweat, genuinely fearing he might hit one of their own people.

Soon, the six people quickly broke through to the security checkpoint. Behind the checkpoint was an empty hall with only a few Zombies wandering inside. After the six crossed the checkpoint, Captain Wang told Jia Liuli to take care of the remaining Zombies in the hall. The other five turned back to continue firing at the Zombies pursuing them from behind. In the pitch-black hall, the muzzle flashes from their guns continuously flickered.

In front of the security checkpoint, the Zombie Corpses had already piled up into a small mound. A few mutilated Zombies remained outside. Captain Wang couldn't be bothered with them; as long as they couldn't climb over, there was no need for him to waste any more bullets.

Excluding Jia Liuli, the remaining five were quickly reloading their ammunition, preparing for the breakthrough to the next level.
