Chapter 42 - Daredevil and Punisher

Judging people from this world based on individuals from a different one seemed somewhat biased.

But this "old acquaintance," who also had a "criminal record," was already worth Peter taking a closer look at.

After all, this was the only guy in his line of reasoning who seemed like a major suspect!

"Karen, help me look into this guy named Adrian Toomes," Peter said.

"Okay."

Perhaps because of the test, Iron Man gave Peter as much autonomy as possible, along with some permissions.

Like checking people's backgrounds, this shouldn't have been a permission Peter was supposed to have.

But it also opened him up.

This guy's resume wasn't very long.

Adrian Toomes' parents died when he was young, and he was raised by his older brother, Marcus. He excelled in school.

But then, his brother Marcus was in a car accident. Toomes dropped out of school to take care of his brother, but unfortunately, he couldn't save his life.

After lying in bed for several years, Marcus still died.

As an adult, Toomes, relying on his early studies and his own efforts, became an excellent electrical engineer and inventor. He founded a salvage company – Bestman Salvage.

In fact, while collecting scrap, he had been collecting and repairing some of the useful tools from the waste and then reusing them to make some cheap but well-selling "like new" appliances.

Until 2012, after the Battle of New York, Bestman Salvage received a commission from the city council.

Adrian Toomes thought this was his chance to rise. He bought a new truck, hired new workers, and even took out a huge loan.

But he didn't expect the feds and Stark Industries to also eye this piece of the pie – the high-tech Chitauri technology was certainly a tempting prize for Earth.

And, they were also considering safety.

After all, this alien tech was incredibly significant. It was safer to keep it under their control rather than let it fall into the hands of private organizations.

Under the weight of power, Toomes had no chance to resist.

In the end, Bestman Salvage went bankrupt and was liquidated.

What surprised Peter was that Toomes didn't fall into despair in the following years. Instead, he quickly paid off his debts and lived a good life.

Uh, it's not like Peter was jealous or anything.

That didn't quite make sense.

Leaving aside how Toomes managed to pay off such a massive debt, he didn't even have a company under his name. Where did his money come from?

If there were a suspect index, then in Peter's mind, Toomes's index had jumped from 30 to 70!

Before, he'd wanted to investigate him just to find clues.

Now, he wanted to investigate him to find evidence!

However, Peter hadn't found any more information about Toomes that he wanted.

The guy was clearly hiding something.

This increased his suspect index again, but it also caused problems for Peter's investigation.

At this moment, the bus Peter was on had unknowingly reached Queens and was heading in a direction away from Peter's home.

Peter snapped back to reality and immediately got off the bus.

For the next few days, Peter returned to his usual routine: home, streets, and school.

However, his extracurricular activities now focused on tracking down Adrian Toomes, instead of doing scientific research.

Unfortunately, progress was slow.

Firstly, although Peter often slacked off in class, it was inconvenient to do much investigating at school, with so many people around. It was also difficult to talk to Karen there.

Secondly, the guy was quite cautious, and probably had strong counter-surveillance awareness. Even with Peter's focused investigation, he couldn't find much information about him.

Peter even went to the dark alleys of the chaotic areas at night, looking for thugs to gather information.

Even though progress was slow, it wasn't completely fruitless.

A week later, the weekend arrived again.

Peter snuck out and took a car to Manhattan.

His target was a section of Manhattan, roughly between 34th and 57th Streets, from 8th Avenue to the Hudson River.

The small-time hoodlum he'd captured and interrogated called it: Hell's Kitchen.

From the hoodlum, he also learned that many gangs from different countries had once been entrenched in Hell's Kitchen.

The most famous of these were the Dogs of Hell, the Irish Kitchen, and the Mexican Cartel.

But, a few months ago, these gangs had suffered devastating blows.

First, a masked vigilante called Daredevil defeated Wilson Fisk, the leader the criminal organizations had jointly promoted.

Then, a lone gunman known as the Punisher took measures to permanently eliminate most of the criminal organizations.

However, a centipede, though dead, never truly decomposes.

Nowadays, Hell's Kitchen still housed quite a few ambitious individuals.

After their leaders were arrested and several major gangs disbanded one after another, the remaining small gangs and factions began vying for control of the area.

According to the information from that small-time hoodlum, he had heard several times about gangs in Hell's Kitchen using Energy Weapons in firefights, and it was clear that the other side had a stable channel to obtain such weapons.

Moreover, some information S.H.I.E.L.D. had also ultimately pointed to Hell's Kitchen.

Therefore, Peter decided to come to Hell's Kitchen to try his luck.

Hell's Kitchen.

Peter wasn't really familiar with this place; after all, he'd never been here before.

Fortunately, he had Karen, the smart assistant in his suit.

Not only was she beautiful and had a sweet voice, but she also possessed navigation capabilities, which could quickly help him find his target and plan a suitable route.

Even which car nearby he could hitch a ride with was clear to him.

With the help of Miss Karen, he quickly moved between the buildings until he reached the top of a building.

Here, he saw two people.

One was wearing a somewhat crude high-polymer fiber battlesuit, his body bound to a chimney with chains.

Beside him stood another person, wearing a bulletproof vest and carrying a lot of weapons.

Peter was slightly stunned and quickly lay down.

"Karen, is the one tied up… Daredevil?" Peter asked in confusion.

"Yes, Daredevil, also known as the Devil of Hell's Kitchen."

A picture popped up, showing the media's photos of Daredevil.

"And the other guy?" Peter felt like he recognized the other person too.

Another picture appeared: "After comparison, there's a 90% probability this is the Punisher, another violent individual active in Hell's Kitchen."

"Punisher?"

Peter was surprised.

He hadn't expected to meet two of Hell's Kitchen's most famous vigilantes so soon.

It was just that the way they met was a bit unexpected.
