Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: Osborn Industries and the Daily Bugle

Spider-Man...

No, that's not right.

The Spider-Spirit has finally made it online.

Hawke watched Peter Parker's pupils shrink rapidly and couldn't help but sigh inwardly.

Actually, the reason he'd stood by in the shower and ignored Peter on the school bus wasn't just because he didn't want to get involved in a superhero tragedy, but also because he didn't want his involvement to cause the original Spider-Spirit to fail.

There are three versions of Spider-Man.

Hawke only likes the original Spider-Spirit, who bears a striking resemblance to Bully Maguire.

  As for the Amazing Spider-Man?

He didn't like him at first, but after Garfield's real-life appearance in "The Amazing Spider-Man 3," he started to like him too.

But Holland Spider-Man?

  Sorry.

Hawke just can't like him.

Put it this way, the mere fact that Holland Spider-Man fell in love with a dark-skinned person instantly sent Hawke's impression of him plummeting to negative.

  So…

Hawke's thoughts shifted, and as he looked at Peter Parker, who seemed stunned and staring at him, he was the first to greet him.

  "Good afternoon, Peter."

  "…Good afternoon."

Bully Maguire, regaining his composure, his face once again restored to its innocent expression.

After greeting him, he glanced at Gwen, who was sitting next to him, and also greeted her: "Gwen."

Gwen had just seen Hawke and Peter's gaze meet.

Although Gwen felt a little suspicious, she quickly suppressed it and smiled. "Good afternoon, Peter. I heard you tricked Flash yesterday."

Yesterday at noon, Peter and Flash Thompson had caused a scene in the cafeteria.

Gwen wasn't there, but she heard from others that Peter had become a completely different person, leaving Flash Thompson feeling humiliated.

Peter said nothing, just scratched his head and smiled.

Gwen didn't say much, but simply gave a cheering gesture: "You should have fought back a long time ago. Come on, Peter."

Peter's embarrassed smile only deepened.

Mrs. Snow, who was standing nearby, clapped her hands upon seeing everyone present and urged Peter to take a seat.

After Peter settled on the sofa across from Hawke and Gwen, she walked over to her desk and grabbed three documents.

After a moment,Mrs. Snow handed one of the documents to Gwen: "A holiday job offer for a position as a laboratory assistant at Dr. Connors, Osborne Bioindustries."

Gwen's eyes lit up as she took the document from Mrs. Snow. "Thank you! Dr. Connors just told me yesterday that he'd contact the school in the next few days.

I didn't expect it to happen so soon."

She could still apply to Dr. Connors's lab without this document, but having it would further validate her resume.

Mrs. Snow then looked at Hawke and Peter. "I have two more holiday job offers, but I'm not sure which one you'd like, so I'm asking you to come to my office and choose for yourselves,"she said, about to speak.

Hawke, reacting, raised his right hand, interrupting Mrs. Snow.

  "Wait a minute, Mrs. Snow."

  "What's wrong, Hawke?"

"I still don't quite understand why I was called here."

  "..."

Mrs. Snow was stunned for a moment.

Looking at Hawke's confused expression, she couldn't help but say, "Have you forgotten about our chat in the office last month?"

Hawke blinked at this and recalled the scene of the routine one-on-one chat with the counselor last month.

He remembered it was a routine chat.

  Except...

When he was about to leave last time, Mrs. Snow asked Hawke about his holiday plans, such as whether he had found a summer job or something.

Hawke said he hadn't found one yet. Mrs. Snow then said that if Hawke needed it, she could help him find one.

He didn't take it seriously and agreed casually.

After all, he still hadn't found a summer job for this year.

Hawke, recalling their conversation last month, inhaled subconsciously.

Mrs. Snow amused herself at Hawke's change of expression.

  "You remember?"

  "I remember,"

  Hawke nodded.

Mrs. Snow laughed again, then returned to the topic, waving two documents in her hand.

"One is also a summer job offer from Osborn Industries, in the bio-power generation department.

They need a summer intern to help organize documents.

The other is from the Daily Bugle.

They also happen to need a summer intern."

Although both jobs sounded unskilled, they were indeed unskilled.

But if you approached them yourself, either Osborn or the Daily Bugle would say they had no shortage of people.

This wasn't just two jobs, but a favor from Mrs. Snow.

In short, only by taking the documents Mrs. Snow was holding to Osborn or the Daily Bugle could you get the summer job.

Peter Parker subconsciously glanced at Hawke.

"Hawk, why don't you choose first?"

  "I..."

Hawke came back to his senses and was about to tell Mrs. Snow that he wasn't planning on working during the summer vacation when a thought suddenly occurred to him.

He abruptly changed his words: "I'll go to Osborne."

He had just thought of Dr. Connors's paper on gamma rays that he had read in the library.

  It just so happened.

He had been wondering if he should find an opportunity to meet Dr. Connors, and now this opportunity had arrived.

Peter saw this and looked at Mrs. Snow: "Then I'll go to the Bugle Newspaper.

I really like taking pictures."

  That's right.

You not only like taking pictures, but you also like taking selfies, and you even like to sell your selfies to your own newspaper.

Hawke thought to himself as he listened to Peter's words.

Mrs. Snow didn't care what they thought. After seeing that they had made their own choices, she stopped talking and simply handed the two documents to Hawke and Peter, then gave them instructions.

  "Peter."

  "Yeah."

"When you report to the Daily Bugle, just ask for Mr. J. Jonah Jameson.

When you see Mr. James, just give him the documents you have.

He'll take care of it."

  "Okay."

  "Hawk."

  "Mrs. Snow."

"When you get to Osborn Bio-Industries, go to the Bio-Electro Engineering Department and look for an engineer named Max Dillon. I'll call their supervisor in advance."

  "Okay."

Hawke heard the name and nodded calmly.

  Max Dillon?

By the way, is this the unknown engineer in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 who thought he was ignored by the world because he fell into an electric eel generator and became the Electro?

Never mind. It's none of my business.

Hawke shook his head inwardly.

Because he was more interested in the gamma rays that Dr. Connors was researching than the Electro.

After all he had a hunch that the 'Gamma Ray' he was looking for was likely related to Dr. Connors' research.
