Chapter 27 - [DEM] 27: Terrifying Crisis

Huh?

A biochemical crisis erupts in Tokonosu City, Tokyo falls in a month, and Japan collapses in six months?

This… this is just a bit too unbelievable.

To be honest, Morpheus wasn't the least bit surprised about the idea of a biochemical crisis.

After all, this world was stitched together with all sorts of bizarre things—Tokonosu City, Raccoon City, even the Umbrella Corporation. A biochemical crisis breaking out wasn't exactly shocking.

In fact, Morpheus would've found it stranger if a crisis didn't happen.

But Tokyo falling in a month and Japan collapsing in six months? That was more than a little unbelievable.

This world was a chaotic patchwork of countless elements.

Devils, spirits, and monsters roamed everywhere.

If those things hadn't brought Japan to its knees, why would a mere biochemical crisis do it?

Did they think top-tier Onmyoryoji didn't exist?

Or that devils and spirits didn't exist?

Not to mention, many youkai wouldn't allow Japan to fall. Some fed on humans, and others were born from human fear. Their existence was intertwined with humanity's.

So, to Morpheus, the idea of a biochemical crisis causing Japan's collapse was utterly absurd.

Not to mention, he was here.

Could it be that Miko had seen a false future?

Morpheus was utterly baffled.

"Are you certain the future you saw had all of Japan fall?" Morpheus asked.

Miko nodded. "I saw it clear as day."

"And what about me?" Morpheus pressed. "In this disaster, did I not intervene?"

Though Morpheus wasn't Japanese, he wouldn't just stand by and watch Japan turn into a zombie paradise.

If it became a zombie playground, how could he keep enjoying himself here?

Miko froze, then recalled the future she had seen, her expression turning strange.

"I didn't see you."

She spoke up, "In the future I saw, many unfamiliar people appeared, giving their lives to fight the mutated zombies. But you, Lord Morpheus, didn't seem to exist."

"At least, after Japan fell, I never saw you. And…"

"And what?" Morpheus continued.

Miko said, "In the future I saw, I seemed to be an ordinary person. Hana was just an ordinary person too—not your shrine maidens."

Morpheus vaguely understood. "So, you're saying you saw a future where I don't exist."

Miko nodded.

Hana, utterly confused, said, "A future where Lord Morpheus doesn't exist? But Lord Morpheus is right here."

Morpheus narrowed his eyes. "I think I get it. A parallel world's future."

Miko blinked. Was that it?

Hana, suddenly enlightened, said, "So it's a parallel world's future! That's amazing, Miko! You can actually see the future of a parallel world? How do you do it?"

Miko couldn't quite explain. "Um… I just did it."

"Like eating or drinking, right?" Morpheus clarified.

Miko nodded. "Exactly."

She felt that as long as she willed it, she could see the future of parallel worlds—an ability granted by her top-grade Spirit Sight.

Hana said, "A parallel world's future… is it really that bad?"

Hearing this, Miko hesitated, then said to Morpheus, "Lord Morpheus, I can't shake the feeling that the future I saw wasn't a parallel world's future, but this world's future."

"You're sure?" Morpheus asked.

Miko shook her head. "I'm not entirely certain. It's just a faint feeling."

Hana piped up, "That doesn't add up, Miko. If it's this world's future, why didn't you see Lord Morpheus in it?"

"And we weren't his shrine maidens either. Isn't that contradictory?"

Miko nodded. That was exactly what puzzled her.

Because of this contradiction, she wasn't sure if what she saw was this world's future.

Watching the hesitant Miko, a sudden spark of insight flashed through Morpheus's mind.

Perhaps what Miko saw was this world's original future.

A future where he hadn't transmigrated into this world.

If he hadn't arrived, Miko and Hana would indeed be ordinary people, which aligned with the future she described.

Still, Morpheus couldn't wrap his head around how a mere biochemical crisis could bring down Japan in this world.

This was a chaotic crossover world, after all.

Could he have underestimated this biochemical crisis?

"Miko, tell me, when does the crisis in Tokonosu City break out? Were there any unusual signs beforehand?"

Recalling the future she saw, Miko said slowly, "From what I observed, the biochemical crisis in Tokonosu City erupts in a week."

"There were no warning signs at all. The crisis just exploded out of nowhere."

"After it broke out, Tokonosu City descended into chaos. Masses of people lost control, turned into zombies, and started attacking others."

"Not long after the outbreak, the government intervened immediately, sending large numbers of troops to lock down Tokonosu City."

"No zombies were allowed to leave the city."

"Then, a ton of Onmyoryoji and exorcists entered Tokonosu City to eliminate the zombies."

"For a while, the zombies in Tokonosu City were contained."

"But soon after, some Onmyoryoji and exorcists became infected with the virus, lost their sanity, and turned into zombies."

"These zombies were incredibly destructive. After breaking through the blockade, zombies started appearing in Tokyo."

"Though those special zombies were quickly eliminated, the mutated virus began to spread."

"Soon, even legendary youkai were infected by the virus, attacking humans everywhere."

"A month later, Tokyo completely fell, and the virus spiraled out of control, spreading across the country."

"Six months later, Japan became a zombie paradise."

Morpheus's eyelids twitched a few times as he listened.

Interesting. Truly interesting.

Not only were ordinary people infected and turned into zombies, but even Onmyoryoji, exorcists, and youkai weren't spared.

This reminded Morpheus of the Marvel Zombie Universe.

In that universe, even superheroes and gods were infected by the zombie virus, turning into super-zombies.

In the end, it spread across the entire universe.
