CLARA
A gasp tore from my mouth as I jolted upright in bed. My eyes widened, darting around the room. Even in the dim light from a floor lamp and the drawn curtains, I could make out white walls, crisp bedsheets, and hospital equipment.
The IV line in my wrist told me everything I needed to know. I was in a hospital.
How did I get here?
I remembered William's voice, falling into his arms, and then nothing. Did he bring me here?
"I did."
I whipped my head to the side and saw William standing near the curtains, almost blending into them. A shiver ran through me as he turned fully toward me, his dark gaze locking onto mine. Questions swirled in his eyes.
"Why didn't you tell me?" he asked.
"Tell you what?" I replied, frowning.
