"Harper left."
I hadn't slept all through the night and had come to Clara's as soon as I could, but the last thing I expected to hear was that Harper wasn't here.
"What do you mean she left? Where did she go?"
Clara said nothing at first. Instead, she smiled at me in a gloating manner. It made my stomach turn, and I tightened my grip on the doorframe to stop myself from shaking her until she answered.
When she eventually spoke, her voice was filled with nonchalance and hate.
"She's left New York. Away from all the drama your family and those stupid ones subjected her to. Away from you. She deserved better."
Her words hit me like a punch to the gut. Something pierced my heart and it shattered into a million irreparable fragments. My breath came out in a short, rapid gasp, my throat tightening as I stared at Clara with wide, unblinking eyes.
"She did what?" My voice came out strangled, my head reeling with thoughts as I tried to make sense of her words.
