Chapter 48
Joe's POV
The world returned to me slowly, like a whisper riding on the back of the wind. Everything was foggy, dim, like I was underwater trying to swim toward the surface. The last thing I remembered was a voice. Soft. Trembling. Familiar.
"I'll marry you…"
That voice had pulled me back from the void. But the warmth it brought faded as quickly as it came.
My eyes fluttered open.
Light.
A white ceiling. Beeping machines. Tubes stuck into my arm. A dull ache thundered through my skull, and my body felt like it had been steamrolled.
I was… alive?. But where…where am I?.
I blinked slowly, then saw a shape sitting beside me.
A girl.
She looked like she had been crying for hours. She had red, swollen eyes, and messy hair but she was still… strangely beautiful. Her hands trembled as she wiped my wrist with a damp cloth, whispering something under her breath.
She looked up and gasped softly when she noticed I was awake.
