Avelina's heart began to race as her father stood up. All eyes were on her now. She could not possibly say she was married — that would be even worse. She needed to think fast.
Before her mother could open her mouth to speak, Avelina quickly interrupted.
"Please, you could come in two days. Right now, I'm so stressed because of my long day at school and exams, so my weight wouldn't be right. We wouldn't want a gown that's too tight or too big, would we?" she asked.
The ladies nodded their heads, finally understanding what she meant.
"Oh, true! This is very smart. Wow, Mr. Smith, you have such a beautiful and smart daughter," one of the ladies said.
Avelina managed a small smile. Her mother finally grew calm while her father had a proud look on his face — just as she had expected. That was the only time her father seemed proud of her — when it was something that benefited him or his image.
Avelina sighed she wonder how long she would be able to keep this going.
