Chapter 87 - The Mission (1)

"Ahhhh!!!"

Boom!

A wall was torn down by a humanoid monster that had been sent flying by a bloodied figure emerging from a room full of similar creatures—doglike monsters, except their heads were grotesque blossoms of flesh, teeth, and saliva.

"What horrible things… how the hell did I end up in this damn school now?" Jonathan looked around to figure out where he was.

The fight had spread all the way here, and just as he was about to go back to where he had left Will, he discovered that one of those things was breaking through the wall.

"Is this the portal?" Jonathan walked toward the hole where the monster had entered and discovered that it was identical to the one he had come through.

When he realized this was his chance to leave this place, he didn't hesitate to go through—but not before giving Will clear instructions on how to follow him afterward, in case the situation on the other side wasn't safe.

If Will was patient, he could pass through the portal without any problems. For now, Jonathan had done enough to help him.

Hawkins High School.

Things here had gotten completely out of control. A group of evil people was searching for a scientific project that had slipped from their hands. That scientific project was Eleven, a girl with supernatural powers.

They had all been experimenting with Eleven's abilities to such an extent that they opened a dimensional portal to the Upside Down—the very place where Jonathan was now slaughtering alien monsters.

The Upside Down was a reality or alternate dimension that existed parallel to the human world. It contained the same places and infrastructure as the human world, but it was much darker, colder, and devoid of human life.

The dimension possessed root-like structures and biological membranes that covered nearly every surface, while countless spores floated through the air.

Jonathan had arrived there through a three-dimensional tunnel that connected to that Upside Down world.

After conducting experiments on a telekinetic child at the Hawkins National Laboratory, these people had caused something terrible—supernatural forces began to appear in the local town of Hawkins.

This time, just as they were about to capture the girl known as Eleven, one of the walls began to crack. From within that fracture, a Demogorgon emerged—the same creature that had been tormenting this place and was now ready to kill everyone here.

The lights began to flicker, and many of those present knew exactly what that meant.

The agents holding Will's friends released them, then raised their weapons toward the area that was being destroyed.

"Blood," said Mike, fully aware that the monster came whenever it smelled blood.

"What?"

"Blood."

There were bodies on the ground—everyone had been killed by Eleven, who had resisted being taken back to the lab for further experimentation.

Crack! Crack! Crack!

Everyone froze in terror as they saw the Demogorgon burst through the wall.

"It's the Demogorgon."

Rooooaaarrr!!!

But before all the agents who were there to capture Eleven could react, a slender hand extended from the wall and grabbed the monster by the neck.

Boom!

The Demogorgon's head exploded. Everyone stood paralyzed, unable to comprehend what was happening.

"I can't believe that worked…" Jonathan—who had gone through hell to get here—stepped out of the wall, shaking off chunks of flesh that clung to his body.

"Don't shoot," said Martin Brenner, awestruck by what he was witnessing. He prevented the agents from firing at the man in the black suit.

"He killed the Demogorgon…" Mike couldn't understand how that monster had been killed so easily by one person.

Jonathan, having wiped as much blood as possible from his face, lifted his gaze and feigned surprise. "Who are all of you? Hmm, what a coincidence—aren't you Dr. Martin Brenner?"

"You know me?" Martin didn't recognize Jonathan, so he had no idea how this man knew who he was.

"Well, I'd be looking for you if you hadn't shown up right now." Jonathan dropped his backpack on the ground, reached inside, and before anyone could get nervous, pulled out a small notebook.

Martin stepped forward, handed Eleven over to another agent, and asked, "Who are you?"

"Hmm… Project MKUltra…"

"From the 1950s to the 1970s, Project MKUltra—a program of experiments on human subjects—was designed and carried out by the CIA, known as MKUltra."

Jonathan paused, then continued, "You, Martin Brenner, a high-ranking member of the United States Department of Energy, had a hand in these experiments."

"In 1953, MKUltra reached a secret laboratory and began human experimentation. Participants were given psychedelic drugs and placed in isolation tanks in hopes of expanding the limits of the mind."

"At some point in the 1970s, MKUltra was exposed—along with the alleged abuse of test subjects. Despite this, the lab managed to block any further inquiries."

"But you continued the testing, accidentally opening a dimensional gate that connected this world to the world of monsters. Before you were killed by your superiors, you escaped through the dimensional gate—and they sent me to eliminate you."

Upon hearing this, Martin thought to himself: Arrogant, sarcastic, proud, and very intelligent… He's not lying. I need to get out of here.

"So you really are that doctor?" Jonathan smiled as he gripped his machetes.

Martin looked at his agents and shouted, "Eliminate that man!"

Bang! Bang! Bang!
