Chapter 35 - CHAPTER 35

*CHAPTER 35: Burnt Hand Watch*

The UCT library closed at ten. The boarding house study room closed at eleven. Chloe's room light closed at two oh seven. Michael Black knew these times because he timed them with his burnt hand on his watch.

Chapter thirty five was burnt hand watch beat. Sealed rule. Every five chapters sandalwood, cashmere, burnt hand watch, bath scar. Romance not receipts. Not just court receipts. Sealed.

He sat in his black car outside the boarding house on Main Road. Not inside. Gate guards do not sit inside. Black cashmere coat on the back seat, because the car was warm. Blue-grey eyes on the third floor window. Room Seven. Chloe's room.

Inside Room Seven, Chloe was failing.

Not Biochemistry. She was passing Biochemistry now. Lab coat over gold dress, she wore lab coat to tutorial, Professor Ndlovu said good, she drew sandalwood leaf on Krebs cycle margin. She was passing.

She was failing at being angry.

Hate till one thirty three was sealed. She had one hundred more chapters to hate her mother. She was supposed to call Vanessa Mama, wear gold dress, say my mom was bought for twelve million to leave us. She was supposed to throw cashmere blankets out windows. Chapter thirty four she had thrown Michael's cashmere in dust. That was correct. That was hate.

But at two oh three she had bought Coke and no food again, and at four in the morning her mother had made chicken stew again, and Michael had timed her light again, and she had eaten again. That was not hate. That was hunger for something that was not sushi.

At nine forty seven, Chloe's light was still on. Michael looked at his watch. Burnt hand. The skin was pink and tight over his knuckles. He had burned it saving his first wife from a kitchen fire ten years before. That wife died anyway. Not from fire. From cancer. He burned his other hand in Chapter forty four saving Chloe's lab coat from a boarding kitchen fire. Sealed. Two burnt hands for two women he guarded without touching.

Nine forty seven. Chloe's light on. Her silhouette at the desk. Head in hands. Not studying. Crying.

Michael got out of the car. Black cashmere coat left on seat. He did not need it. Sandalwood smell was enough. He walked to the gate. Warden knew him now. Gate guard.

"Room Seven again?" warden said.

"Light still on," Michael said. "She has exam tomorrow. Biochemistry. She needs to sleep."

Warden shrugged. "Eighteen. They never sleep."

Michael stood at the bottom of the stairs. Sandalwood stairs from Chapter thirty three. He did not go up. No touch till seventy six. No entering a girl's room. Ghost promise.

He put his burnt hand on his watch and timed.

Nine forty eight. Light still on. Silhouette still head in hands.

Nine forty nine. Light still on.

Nine fifty. A small sound from third floor. Not crying. Paper tearing.

Michael's blue-grey eyes narrowed.

He took out his phone. He did not call Ava. Ava was in her empty house washing grey sweater again, never eating. He called the study room landline. The boarding house had one landline for all five floors.

Room Seven picked up on third ring.

"Hello?" Chloe's voice. Thick.

"This is gate guard," Michael said. "Your light is on. Burnt hand watch says nine fifty. You have exam at eight. You need sleep."

Silence. Then a wet laugh.

"You time my light? Creepy."

"I time your study," Michael said. "You studied for three hours yesterday. Today you studied one hour. Then you cried two hours. That is not study."

Chloe sniffed. "How do you know I cried?"

"Your silhouette. Head in hands at nine forty seven. Head not on book."

Chloe looked out her window. She could see his black car. She could see a dark shape at the bottom of the stairs, even though she could not see his face. Sandalwood seemed to come up the stairwell even from three floors down.

"I failed again," she whispered. "Practice test. I failed. Vanessa Mama said I should quit. She said Biochemistry is for girls who want to be bought for twelve million. She said I should do marketing like her son Tyler."

Michael's burnt hand tightened on his watch.

"Tyler sells fake watches," he said. "You study real molecules."

Chloe laughed, real laugh this time, through snot.

"My mom keeps washing my old t-shirt," she said, sudden, because eighteen year olds confess at night. "Even though I said I hate it. She hangs it next to your cashmere blanket. Why does she wash your blanket?"

"Because I left it at her door," Michael said. "She washes things for people she loves. That is how she never eats but feeds."

Chloe sat on her floor, phone cord stretched, lab coat on floor next to her. Gold dress hanging on door. Two futures hanging.

"Gate guard," she said. "Why do you guard my gate?"

Michael looked at his burnt hand. Pink scar over watch.

"Because your mother was left to die in wilderness for twelve million. I bought her file for twelve million to LIVE. She was left. You were left too. You are eighteen. You should not be left."

Chloe cried again. Quiet.

"My mom slapped me in Chapter thirty one," she whispered. "One slap fixed. She never slapped me before."

"One slap changes," Michael said. "You called Vanessa Mama in kitchen. She is not Mama. Mama is at bottom of stairs with chicken stew."

Chloe wiped her nose with lab coat sleeve.

"Are you going to marry my mom?" she asked. Direct. Eighteen.

No touch till seventy six. Scar touch heart not sex. Wedding Chapter ninety eight Table Mountain seventy third floor white lab coat over white marble dress ten guests Chloe walks mom vows come in I already did eighteen years ago twelve million framed as gift not ring. Sealed. Papa M Chapter one twenty four we already did Papa M. Sealed.

"I will not touch her till she asks me to stay," Michael said. "That is ghost promise. Chapter three."

"That is stupid," Chloe said. "If you love someone you touch them."

"Sometimes you time them instead," Michael said. "Burnt hand watch. You time their light till they sleep. That is touch without touch."

Silence. Nine fifty four. Light still on.

"Gate guard," Chloe said. "Can you time me till I sleep?"

Michael sat on the bottom stair. Sandalwood stairs. Black cashmere coat in car, but sandalwood stayed.

"Yes," he said. "I will time."

Chloe put phone on desk, on speaker. She climbed into bed, lab coat still on floor. She left light on.

Michael kept his burnt hand on his watch.

Nine fifty five. Light on. Breathing slow on phone.

Nine fifty six. Light on. Breathing slower.

Nine fifty seven. Light off.

Michael smiled. First time that night. Blue-grey eyes in dark stairwell.

"Sleep," he whispered into phone. "Exam at eight. You will pass. Lab coat over gold dress."

He hung up. He stayed on bottom stair till ten thirty, timing nothing, just guarding gate, burnt hand on watch, black cashmere coat waiting in car, sandalwood lingering on stairs for Chloe to smell in morning.

At ten thirty one, he walked back to his car. He wrote one line in his small notebook where he timed everything.

_Chloe 18: studied 1 hr, cried 2 hrs, slept 21:57. Ate chicken stew yesterday. Wore lab coat today. Hate till 133 but one thread looser._

He drove to Ava's empty house. He did not knock. He left black cashmere blanket folded at door again, washed and dried, smelling of sun and dust and laundry line. No touch till seventy six.

Ava found it at six next morning when she went to hang grey sweater. She held it and knew he had timed her daughter to sleep.

Burnt hand watch beat done.
