*CHAPTER 37: The Twelve Million Receipt*
Chloe did not get into the gold car.
Vanessa hooted twice more. Long. Annoyed. The kind of hoot that made boarding house girls come to windows and close them fast.
Chloe stood with phone in both hands, gold dress catching morning light. The paper in the photo was old. Court stamp faded but still readable. PAID. R12,000,000.00. Name: Chloe Mhlongo, minor. Trustee: Ethan Mhlongo. Beneficiary payment - voluntary abandonment settlement.
She read caption again.
"Ask your Mama what she really sold that night you thought she left. Ask your gate guard what twelve million really bought."
Voluntary abandonment settlement. Chloe knew those words from Law 101 tutorial last term. When a parent signs away rights.
Ava was still on bottom stair, Tupperware chicken stew getting cold on her lap. Michael one stair above, black cashmere coat, wet hair dripping onto coat shoulders. No touching. Two steps apart. Sealed.
Chloe turned back from gate.
"Is it true?" Her voice was not gold dress voice. Not Vanessa Mama voice. Small. Ten years old small.
Ava stood slow. Leg throbbed. She had not stood that fast since wilderness night when she dragged leg through fynbos.
"What did she send you, Baby?" Ava asked. She had not called her Baby since night of rain when she slapped her for calling Vanessa Mama. Since that night she stopped, because Chloe said "Don't call me Baby, laundry girl."
Chloe held phone out. Not to Ava. To Michael. Because gate guard was safe. Gate guard never lied. Gate guard stood at gate in rain, timed her studying till one AM, saved lab coat from fire yesterday.
"Did my mother sell me?" Chloe asked Michael. "For twelve million?"
Michael did not take phone. He looked at Ava. Permission. He promised that first week after hospital, when he bought her file. "I will not tell your story. You tell when ready."
Ava stepped down one stair. Down towards gate. Towards daughter. Two steps became three steps between her and Michael now. That was okay.
"Not sold," Ava said. Voice shaking but clear. "I didn't sell you, Chloe. I signed."
"What is difference?" Chloe shouted, and boarding house girls closed windows now, pretending not listen.
Ava remembered real night. Not chapter. Rain like today. Ethan came home with papers. Ethan said UCT lawyers would take house if she didn't sign. Said Chloe would go to state home if she didn't sign abandonment. Said he had buyer for hospital debt already, man in Constantia, twelve million, would clear everything and Chloe would have gold dress school. Said "Sign, you leave, we tell her you left for man." Ethan left her in wilderness two days later to die after she signed. Broken leg. No phone. She dragged six hours.
But she cannot tell all now. Chloe not ready till graduation. Sealed till seventy-six. Heart not sex.
"I signed paper that said I would leave for two years so you could stay in house with father," Ava said. Simple. True part. "Ethan said if I didn't, we lose house and you go to state. I had no money then. My book not selling. GoodNovel had not paid yet."
"For twelve million?" Chloe cried.
"There was no twelve million for me," Ava said. "There was twelve million debt Ethan made in your name. Hospital file. He opened file when you were born, premature, said you needed private ward. He put debt in your name. When I signed leave, he sold debt to Michael's company to clear house. I didn't know till Michael showed me file last winter, when you were studying till one AM in lab coat and I brought rooibos and you threw it."
Michael nodded once. Burnt hand tucked. He remembered that night. He picked up rooibos from floor.
Chloe looked at receipt again. Trustee: Ethan Mhlongo. That part true.
Vanessa hooted again, longer, then shouted from car window, "Chloe! She is lying like that night she left wet grass! Come, I have sushi and advocate! Advocate will show real paper!"
Ava flinched. Advocate. Ethan always threatened advocate.
Michael stepped down one stair. Now level with Ava, but still two steps apart sideways. He spoke to Chloe, not loud, so Vanessa outside gate could not hear.
"Chloe, lab coat," he said. "You asked tutorial question yesterday, remember? About voluntary settlement and duress. What did professor say?"
Chloe blinked. She remembered. She got compliment for that question. Professor said "If signed under threat of losing child home, not voluntary."
"Professor said duress," Chloe whispered.
"Yes," Michael said. "Three seconds yesterday you looked at lab coat. Today five seconds? You choose."
Vanessa got out of gold car now. Gold dress too, like Chloe's. Mother-daughter matching. She walked to gate, but Michael's gate lock was new. He changed it after that night of rain when Vanessa came in and toasted "Mama" and Chloe clapped.
Vanessa shouted through gate bars, "Ava Mhlongo! You told daughter you left to work? You left to be bought! This receipt proves! Ethan sold you for twelve million and you went willing! Gate guard bought you to be nanny! Laundry girl!"
Boarding house girls now fully at windows.
Ava did not shout back. She learned that night of rain. One slap fixed more than shouting.
She just held chicken stew Tupperware out to Chloe.
"I made this yesterday after fire," she said. "You didn't eat. You studied till one AM in lab coat I bought at Woolies. Michael timed. He burned wrist saving coat from kettle fire. You left coat near kettle. He saved it. Gold dress burns, remember? You wanted gold dress for lab and you failed that test? Then you wore lab coat and passed?"
Chloe looked at stew. Chicken. Her favorite before Vanessa sushi.
"I didn't throw blanket because I hate you," Chloe said suddenly, quiet. "I threw because Vanessa said if I wear black cashmere, I look like laundry girl, not gold girl. She said you washed it to make gate guard love you like you did Ethan."
Ava's heart broke and healed same second. She finally heard truth.
"I washed it because you threw it in wet grass and it rained all night," Ava said. "Black bleeds. Like you bleed when you study till one AM and don't eat."
Chloe stared at Tupperware. At receipt photo still on phone screen. At gold car. At lab coat now in Michael's burnt hand.
She did something she had not done since that night before rain when she still called Ava Mama before Vanessa came.
She took Tupperware. Not lab coat yet. Tupperware.
"I eat this at tutorial," she said, voice small. "Not sushi."
Vanessa screamed through gate, "Chloe! You ungrateful! I bought gold dress!"
Chloe did not look at Vanessa. She looked at Michael.
"Gate guard, is it true you bought my mother debt for twelve million? That lady in town said."
Michael answered honest, because sealed says no lies till seventy-six.
"Yes. I bought file. Not you. File. Your father's debt he put in your name. I bought to protect, not own. Like lab coat. I buy lab coat not to own you, to save you from burning. Twelve million framed as gift, not ring. Your mother still pays me back with book money, little by little, at Sunlight bar rate, not interest. She paid three thousand last month."
Chloe looked at Ava. "You pay him?"
Ava nodded. "Every GoodNovel chapter. Since hospital. Like washing black cashmere twice because black bleeds. Small, small."
Chloe held Tupperware tight. Chicken stew warm through plastic.
Vanessa tried gate, locked.
"Chloe, get in car! Now!" Vanessa shouted.
Chloe stepped away from gate, towards boarding house stairs, away from gold car.
"I go to tutorial," she said. "In lab coat? Where is lab coat?"
Michael held it out. White, Woolies, but clean. Saved from fire yesterday.
Chloe took it. First time she took without throwing floor.
She put it over gold dress. Gold under white. Looked strange. Looked right.
She walked past Ava, not hugging, but close enough Ava smelled her shampoo, same as that night of rain before slap.
At gate, she stopped, turned, looked at Vanessa.
"Vanessa, don't call me again today. I have exam," she said, and not Mama this time.
She walked to UCT shuttle, lab coat over gold dress, Tupperware in hand.
Vanessa stood at gate, gold dress, mouth open.
After shuttle left, Ava sat on bottom stair again, legs weak. Michael sat one stair above, no touch, two steps.
He whispered, burnt hand on watch, "Tupperware taken. Lab coat taken. Eight seconds looking. Yesterday three. Progress."
Ava leaned head back towards his knee, not touching, smelling sandalwood and smoke and now chicken stew.
From gate, Vanessa shouted one last thing before getting into gold car, phone out, filming.
"You think lab coat saves? I have advocate paper! Real one! With your fingerprint! You sold her for twelve million and gate guard filmed it!"
She drove off, gold car loud.
Michael stood, locked gate again, checked lock twice.
Ava whispered, "What paper she has?"
Michael's blue-grey eyes dark.
"Not receipt," he said. "Ethan's other file. The one I didn't buy. The one with your wilderness photo. He kept copy."
*COIN CLIFFHANGER:* _Vanessa sent Chloe second photo while Chloe on shuttle - Ava lying in fynbos, broken leg, phone showing Ethan's text "Sign or stay and die." Timestamp same night as twelve million receipt. Caption: "Your Mama didn't leave for work. She left you to die after selling you. Ask gate guard why he hides photo."
