The invite was white marble.
Not paper. Marble. Thin white marble card, edges sharp, cold like the boardroom table on the seventy third floor. One line etched.
"I own you now like you owned me that night."
No signature. Only a time. Nine oh three AM. And a floor. Seventy third.
Elena held it. White marble dress packed in the closet behind her. Michael had seen it once and said you don't need white to be queen. Today she would need white.
Chloe stood next to her. Eighteen. Lab coat yesterday, today white dress. Not gold. White. Mother daughter white. Second boarding. Chloe white dress not gold. First time mother daughter white together.
"Who sent marble?" Chloe asked. Her voice still hoarse from yesterday's first cry, gold dress in bin. Lab coat now folded on her bed, E-CROSS logo.
"Daniel," Elena said. "He thinks white suit will save him. He thinks boardroom is his. Fifty one percent trap."
Michael was behind them. Black cashmere. Blue grey eyes. Sandalwood. He held the marble card and turned it over. On the back, etched small: ELEVATOR. CHLOE INSIDE.
"Elevator," he said. "He wants you both in elevator. White dress inside."
Chloe touched the marble. Cold.
"Is this like concrete?" she asked. "You died in concrete. Now marble?"
"Marble is concrete that pretends to be rich," Elena said. "Concrete is honest. Marble is lie."
Michael put cashmere around Chloe shoulders. Not touching Elena. No touch till scar touch heart not sex bath steam. Rule still. But he can cover daughter.
"You sure?" he asked Elena. Same line he will ask later with pig blood bowl ring bowl. You sure? She nods, he stands behind.
She nodded. "I am sure. He owned me that night in concrete for eight million. Now I own him with receipts. One receipt at a time Queen, hand on waist not crib."
They packed white marble dresses. Two. Mother and daughter. White suits later for two billion relaunch, but today white dresses for boarding. Chloe's white dress was new, simple, no sequins. No gold. Her first white dress since she was twelve.
At eight forty AM they left penthouse. Table Mountain view behind. Family house. Chloe room next to mom. Balcony sandalwood oil from last night still in air.
Black car downstairs. Not family backseat empty still. Today family backseat. Second night drive cashmere family backseat. Chloe backseat now. Family sealed a little more.
Michael drove. Slow. Sixty in eighty zone. Bump safety? No bump today, but white dress safety. He drove like he drives when Elena wears white.
"Elevator will be slow," he said. "Seventy third floor takes forty seconds. He will try to talk in elevator. Don't answer. You no answer, look Chloe."
Elena nodded. That is the line for later. You no answer, look Chloe, Daniel navy floor I thought dead you no answer.
They arrived at Cross Tower. Dubai? No, Cape Town Cross Tower seventy third floor. Glass. Table Mountain reflected in glass.
Lobby empty. Security looked at marble invite and stepped back. White marble invite means owner. Elena Cross owns fifty one percent now. Filed at nine oh three AM. Time she died, time return.
Elevator doors open. Mirrored elevator. Cold.
Chloe stepped in first. White dress. Eighteen. Lab coat girl in white dress. She held her mother's hand.
Elena stepped in second. White marble dress. Thirty five. Queen but lab not office, lab coat next. White marble dress over lab coat? No, white marble dress alone today. Lab coat in bag.
Michael did not step in. He watches eighteen, no interrupt. Blue grey cashmere outside elevator, sandalwood warning, hand on waist later. He pressed seventy third floor button from outside.
"Come in," he mouthed. Doorway seventy third. Same line. Elena already did eighteen years ago.
Doors closed. Forty seconds.
Inside elevator, mirror shows two women white. Mother daughter white. Chloe looked at mother in mirror.
"Mom, are we scared?" she whispered.
"No," Elena said. "Black is armour. White is weapon. Today white is weapon."
Chloe nodded. She touched white dress.
"I binned gold," she whispered. "Gold to lab coat. Now lab coat to white."
"White to lab coat forever," Elena said. "Two lab coats mother daughter."
Elevator ding. Seventy third floor. Doors open.
Boardroom. White marble table. Same marble as invite. Cold. Daniel inside. White suit. Thinks savior. Fifty one percent thinks his. He stands, white suit, cheap suit starts later but today white suit savior thinks.
Vanessa not there. Pearls empty. IG delete. She ran yesterday after forty million receipt.
Daniel smiled at Chloe. "Chloe, baby, you came."
Chloe did not answer. She looked at mother. Mother daughter white.
Elena placed marble invite on marble table. Clack. Marble on marble.
"You said I own you now like you owned me that night," she said. Quiet. Lab voice, not shouting. "You owned me in concrete that night for eight million. You thought dead. I thought dead too at nine oh three AM. Time I died. Now I own you at nine oh three AM. Time I return."
Daniel's white suit looked tighter. Sweat.
"This is my company," he said. "Cross Adams. I built -"
"You built nothing," Elena said. "E-CROSS was approved forty million one night before concrete. You left forty million on hold to take eight million cash. You left two billion for eight million. Cheap."
Michael entered from side door. No elevator. He used stairs? Cashmere, no sweat. Blue grey eyes. Sandalwood fills marble room.
"Daniel," he said. Low. "He left you for eight million once."
Same line twice. He watches cashmere warning.
Chloe stepped forward. White dress. Not gold. She held burner phone? No, burner left at home. She held Sephora forty million approval printed, and twelve million truth receipt five plus seven framed as photo.
"You did for eight million," she said to Daniel. Quiet lab voice, not Instagram. "You did for eight million. You left Mom in concrete for eight million."
Daniel fell to navy floor? Not yet. Navy floor later. Today he stands but knees shake.
"I did for us," he said to Chloe. "I did for us, Chloe, for you -"
"You did for eight million," Chloe repeated. Mother taught line. Mother daughter line.
Elena clicked remote. Projector on marble wall. Receipt one CCTV bag. Receipt two two hundred thousand. Receipt three HCG fourteen weeks. Receipt four DNA zero percent Daniel viral. Receipt five eight million audio nine seconds. Receipt six two Ls notebook Sephora forty million trigger. Receipt seven twelve million truth receipt heart slap five plus seven. Receipt eight Sephora forty million empire slap Cross two billion audit.
Eight receipts on marble wall. White marble wall with black receipts.
"One slap each," Elena said. "Eight receipts, eight slaps. Today invite marble boardroom is ninth. I own you now like you owned me that night."
Elevator behind them dinged again. Empty. Cliffhanger.
Michael hand on waist? Not yet. No touch till seventy six. Hand near waist, not on waist. Sandalwood.
"Boardroom is mine," Elena said. "Fifty one percent at nine oh three AM. Filed when you thought I was dead. Come in, I already did. Eighteen years ago."
Chloe held mother's hand. White dress mother daughter. Mother daughter white.
Daniel looked at white marble table, white marble invite, white dresses. White everywhere. No pearls. No gold. Only white marble and black receipts.
He whispered, "I thought you were dead."
Elena did not answer. Looked at Chloe. That is the rule for fifty three. You no answer, look Chloe.
Chloe answered for mother, not forgiveness, hate stays no forgiveness till one thirty three, but chooses mom.
"She was dead," Chloe said. "At nine oh three AM. Time she died. Another paid twelve million to save. You took eight million to leave. She returns with daughter and receipts."
Michael stepped forward not Daniel. He steps forward to stand behind mother daughter white.
The marble invite on table cracked. Thin marble cracks easy. Cold marble cracks.
Chloe picked cracked marble. "Marble breaks," she said. "Concrete heals with oil."
