Chapter 7 - CHAPTER 7:THE SAFE HOUSE WITH NO WHITE

The safe house was not a house. It was a penthouse on top of V&A Waterfront, glass walls, ocean on three sides, no curtains, no white.

Ghost said, "Your husband liked white because white shows dirt. He could see when you were dirty. I like black and glass because black hides blood and glass shows ocean. You decide what to hide."

It was 6:02 PM. I had been awake for 32 hours since extraction. Leg throbbed past injection. Burn on hand pulsed. But brain was sharp. Revenge sharpens.

Chloe was safe at Mrs. Patel's house, not this penthouse. Ghost insisted. "Your daughter does not need to see how ghosts live." He had a point. Penthouse had no family photos. Only one photo: My father in docks 1998, arm around skinny 14-year-old Ghost, both covered in fish oil, smiling. My father smiled like that only when he saved something.

Mrs. Patel had packed koeksisters, my father's watch box, and my mother's old blue shawl. She left note: "For cold nights when ghosts are too cold. — Patel."

At 6:17 PM, Advocate Khumalo video called. She was in chambers, robe still on.

"Eleanor, warrant for Richard Ndlovu will be executed at 9:01 AM tomorrow unless he signs. He is currently at airport, his brother refused to take him. He has no money. He called me at 6:00 PM begging for deal. I told him deal is you sign divorce papers I sent to his email at 5:45 PM, you return all company property, you admit in writing to adultery and financial misconduct, and you vacate marital home by 7 PM tonight. He has 43 minutes."

"Will he sign?" I asked.

"He will. Because if he doesn't, at 9:01 AM Detective Daniels arrests him in front of morning commuters and press. He cares about shame more than money. Men like him always do."

She paused, looked at Ghost in background.

"And Mrs. Vance, your... investor... returned fifty million to founder account. That is now documented as voluntary penalty payment from Tiffany Moore, not as income, so no tax. Smart. Whoever he is, he knows law."

Ghost did not react. He was making tea. Not green detox tea. Strong tea, milk, two sugars, like my father. He brought to me without asking.

At 6:43 PM, Richard signed. Digital signature, verified by Advocate Khumalo's clerk. Email came with subject: "SIGNED - R. Ndlovu - Divorce Settlement - FINAL." No message. No "Ellie." Just signed.

At 6:44 PM, second email. Apology letter, forced by Advocate. Two lines: "I admit to adultery and misuse of founder funds. I will vacate house by 7 PM." No sorry for fire. He never apologized for fire. He apologized for what could be proven.

At 6:51 PM, removal truck arrived at my marital home in Constantia. Not my truck. Ghost's truck. Men in black took Richard's suits, his golf clubs, his crypto mining rig, his collection of watches that were not my father's. They left my dresses, my daughter's room, my father's books.

At 7:03 PM, house was empty of him. Mrs. Patel sent photo. Living room bare where his chair was. She wrote: "Air is lighter, Mrs. Vance."

I cried then. Not at boardroom. Not at airport. At empty chair photo. Twelve years I arranged cushions on that chair for his back pain. Twelve years I brought tea to that chair. Now chair gone and air lighter. I cried because lighter air should have come sooner.

Ghost did not comfort. He sat opposite, gave space. He knows crying is not emergency. Crying is accounting.

At 7:31 PM, Detective Daniels called. Tiffany Moore released on bail? No. Denied bail. Flight risk. She tried to board to Mauritius with stolen funds. Judge kept her in Pollsmoor overnight. First night ever in jail. White dress in evidence bag. Blanket returned to Vance Industries property department.

"She asked for lawyer," Daniels said. "She asked for Richard. Richard did not answer her call. He answered yours."

I hung up. Ocean outside turned dark. No lights in penthouse. Only water reflection.

Chloe video called at 7:58 PM. She was in my old bed at father's house, blue shawl around, eating koeksisters.

"Mom, Mrs. Patel said you took house back. Can I have his office for study? It has better light."

"Yes. It's yours. Paint it black if you want."

She laughed. "Mom, are you okay? You limping in morning scared me."

"I am in safe house with elevation and strong tea. Ghost is here but he is not scary when he makes tea. Are you okay?"

She paused, 18-year-old pause that is really 30-year-old.

"Mom, did you ever love him? Dad?"

Question I avoided for 32 hours.

"I loved who I thought he was when I was 22 and my father just died. I loved a man who said he would protect his company. I did not love who he became at 21:14 in Warehouse 7. That man I left there to be arrested."

Chloe nodded. "I loved him too until yesterday at 8:59 AM when you told me to go to boardroom, not to him. I chose you at 8:59. I will choose you every day at 8:59."

She hung up to study. Law books.

At 8:14 PM, Ghost brought dinner. Not ordered. Cooked. Simple. Grilled fish, rice, lemon. Same meal my father made for us when my mother died. I did not ask how he knew. He knew because my father told 14-year-old boy in docks everything about his daughter.

We ate on floor, not table. Leg elevated on pillow. No white plates. Black hides blood.

At 8:42 PM, I asked question I avoided.

"Ghost, twelve million. You paid. When do you want it back?"

He ate slowly. Chewed.

"I don't."

"You don't want money back?"

"I want what your father said. 'Bring my daughter home.' You are home. Debt paid."

"So I owe you nothing?"

"You owe me you heal. You owe me you run company better than him. You owe me you let me stay while you heal because men like him will try again. They always try again when woman takes back power. They come at night. They come with lawyers. They come with new girlfriends. I stay until they stop coming."

He stood, cleared plates. He limps too, slightly, left leg. From 1998 stab. I never noticed before.

At 9:01 PM, exactly 12 hours after I fired Richard, my phone buzzed. News24 alert: "BREAKING: Vance Industries CEO Fired By Wife After Attempted Murder Footage — Husband Stranded At Airport, Mistress In Jail."

Photo was me at 9:23 AM, black dress, burnt hand up, Chloe holding it, Ghost behind. Headline under: "REBORN IN BLACK."

I showed Ghost. He read, nodded.

"Good photo. You look expensive."

"I look burnt."

"Burnt is expensive. White is cheap. Black is armour. You said that."

At 9:14 PM, I took pain meds. Doctor said take with food. I took. Leg elevated. Ocean dark outside glass. No curtains. Ghost sat in corner chair, not bed, not close, just presence. Like guard dog that knows not to sleep when house just got back.

At 9:31 PM, I slept. First real sleep since Warehouse 7. No nightmare of lighter. Dream of my father in docks, arm around me and skinny boy, saying "Time is only thing they can't steal unless you let them."

At 9:32 PM, watch ticked on bedside table. Gold Patek. Too big for my wrist but ticking for me now.

And outside, Cape Town mountain dark, harbor lights small, my old marital home empty of his chair, airport holding cell holding Tiffany in blanket, airport chair holding Richard with no cards, no watch, no wife, no 51%.

All at 9:31 PM. All because at 21:14 one man said "Leave her. Light it." and at 21:16 another man said "Buy her."

I was bought. Now I was home.

And black was indeed armour for sleep.
