Chapter 9 - CHAPTER 9:THE NIGHT THEY CAME BACK

At 8:47 PM, they came back.

Not Richard. He was on bus, in small house, no cards. They who he owed money. The men he borrowed from to buy Tiffany necklace, Moët, crypto mining rig that never mined, and the forty million he thought he could replace before I noticed.

My father always said, "If a man steals forty million and buys champagne, he already owes sixty million to someone else."

Ghost knew. That is why he did not go home at 6 PM. That is why he stayed in corner chair, suit jacket off, gun not visible but presence visible.

I was asleep, leg elevated, watch on wrist, pain meds making ocean outside glass look like it was inside room. Chloe had left at 7 PM to go to Mrs. Patel's, exam tomorrow. Penthouse was just me and Ghost and ticking.

At 8:47 PM, building security buzzed. Not lobby. Private elevator, my father's old code that only three people knew: me, Mrs. Patel, Ghost. Someone used code. Code was 1989. Year father built company. Richard knew code too. He used it to bring Tiffany to penthouse once. Mrs. Patel told me.

Ghost stood instantly. No limp now. Limp gone when danger.

"Stay here," he said quietly. Not command. Request from man who never requests.

He opened door to elevator lobby. Two men. Not Richard. Bigger, suits that don't fit, cheap watches, expensive shoes. Loan sharks from Bellville, Ghost said later. Richard borrowed R2 million at 40% interest to buy ring for Tiffany that she posted as "my love got me from Dubai."

"Where is Vance?" one said in Afrikaans accent. "He owes us. He said his wife's company will pay. Founder account. He gave us papers."

They held paper. My forged divorce settlement. The one with one L. They thought it was real. They thought Richard still owned 51%.

Ghost stepped into lobby, closed penthouse door behind him, so I couldn't hear. But glass walls show shadow. I saw.

He did not hit. Ghost does not hit first. He talks. Cold talk.

"That paper is forgery. This building is owned by Eleanor Vance. Founder account is frozen by High Court as of 11:29 AM today. You have no claim here. You have claim in Khayelitsha where he is sitting on his brother's couch with R85 bus ticket."

Men laughed. "And who are you? Her new husband? We saw TikTok. Ghost, ne? You think you are ghost?"

Ghost smiled. Winter smile from Chapter 4.

"I am the man who bought her medical bills for twelve million. You want forty million? Talk to police. They have her girlfriend in Pollsmoor. Or talk to me outside, not in front of daughter's mother who is sleeping with three plates in leg."

At 8:51 PM, I disobeyed. I got up. Leg screamed. I limped to door, opened. Two men turned.

They saw me. Black dress, burn hand, anchor necklace, limp, watch too big. Not white. Not pure. Armour.

One said, "Mrs. Vance? Your husband owes us—"

"Mr. Ndlovu," I corrected, voice sleep-hoarse but clear. "Richard Ndlovu. Not Vance. He changed name back at 6:43 PM when he signed. Check your paper. Ndlovu. You lent money to Ndlovu, not Vance. Vance Industries does not pay Ndlovu debts. Clause 17B. Read it."

I held up founder agreement, paper copy from desk. They couldn't read English well, but they saw 1989 stamp.

Ghost added, "He is at this address." He wrote Joseph Ndlovu address in Khayelitsha on paper. "Go there. Don't come here again. This is founder property. My property now too, as security holder. You come here again, I will call Detective Daniels who already has your names from Richard's phone which we gave to police at 9:01 AM."

They looked at each other. They calculated. Forty million fantasy vs two million real debt vs ghost vs woman in black with watch.

They left at 8:54 PM. Elevator down. No fight. Ghosts don't need fight when paperwork is bigger.

At 8:55 PM, I collapsed back onto bed. Leg shaking badly. Ghost caught before fall.

"You should have stayed," he said, not angry, just fact.

"They used my father's code. I had to."

He lifted leg onto pillow, elevated higher than before. He brought ice, not tea. Ice for swelling.

At 9:03 PM, exactly 48 hours after divorce became final? No, 12 hours after final. Time messing. But 9:03 PM is time I took back company two nights ago. Now I took back door code.

Ghost changed code at 9:07 PM while I watched. New code: 0903. Time I took back company.

"Only you, me, Chloe, Patel know now," he said.

At 9:14 PM, Chloe called, panicked. Mrs. Patel's house alarm triggered. Someone tried back gate.

Ghost was on phone instantly to his man outside Patel's house. Man said: Richard. Richard walked from Khayelitsha to father's house, 22 kilometers, trying to get clothes that were not sent yet. He was not violent. He was drunk, crying, saying "My clothes, my father's house."

Patel did not open gate. She called me. Chloe was inside, hiding in my father's old safe room behind painting. Same safe where Clause 17B was.

"Stay in safe room," I told Chloe. "Don't come out until Ghost's man says."

At 9:31 PM, Ghost's man called back. Richard left gate, sat on curb, crying, brother came to fetch him in old Toyota. No violence. Just small man who lost big chair.

At 9:42 PM, Chloe called again, safe. "Mom, he was crying outside? Dad?"

"Yes."

"Did you see?"

"No. Ghost's man saw."

"Is he okay?"

Question 18-year-old asks about father who left mother to burn.

"He is breathing. That is more than he left me at 21:14 in Warehouse 7. He is okay."

Chloe was quiet, then: "Can we not press charges for clothes? Just for fire and money? Let him have old Ndlovu clothes?"

I looked at Ghost. Ghost nodded. He already packed old clothes in box, not suits. Just t-shirts from before Vance name, jeans, one old watch that was not Patek.

"Yes," I said. "Old clothes only. Sent tomorrow at 9:07 AM. Same time I fired him. So he remembers."

At 10:03 PM, building security confirmed elevator code changed, no entry. At 10:14 PM, Detective Daniels called to say Tiffany's lawyer tried to call me for bail money from founder account. He told lawyer account frozen and owned by me.

At 10:31 PM, I finally took night pain meds. Stronger. Doctor said take only if leg elevated and not walking. I was elevated. Ghost sat in corner chair again, jacket off, gun now visible on table but not pointed, just present.

"Will they come again?" I asked.

"Loan sharks? No. They went to Khayelitsha. They will get brother's Toyota, not your company."

"Richard?"

"He will come again when drunk. When small house feels too small. When he remembers big house had air lighter. He will come to gate, not to door. Men like him don't come to door after they are fired at 9:07 AM in front of cameras. They come to gate and cry."

At 10:47 PM, I asked question I didn't ask before.

"Ghost, why did you buy me for twelve million? Really? Not my father's debt. Really."

He was quiet long. Ocean dark outside, no curtains, reflection of us in glass.

"Because at 21:14 you were left to die and no one came except private security. At 21:16 I came because your father in 1998 said 'If my daughter ever burns, you buy her back, no matter price.' He told me price would be twelve million one day. He was right. He always right about price."

"My father told you in 1998 I would burn?"

"He told me men like Richard would try to burn you. He said 'Ghost, you will know price because it will be what they think she is worth dead.' They thought twelve million. I paid. Now you worth fifty million plus watch plus company plus foundation. Price went up."

He stood, fixed ice on leg, checked elevation.

At 11:03 PM, I slept. Not because meds. Because door code changed to 0903, Chloe safe in safe room, loan sharks gone to Khayelitsha, Richard on curb crying not at my door, Tiffany in Pollsmoor orange not white, and man who bought me for twelve million sitting in corner chair with gun on table and tea gone cold but presence warm.

Dream again: My father in docks, 1989, holding baby me, saying "Time is only thing they can't steal unless you let them." And skinny 14-year-old Ghost behind, learning to write name with my hand.

At 11:14 PM, watch ticked on wrist, too big but mine, and safe house with no white had no entry except those who know 0903.

And they who owed, they who borrowed, they who burned, they all learned that black is armour and armour has new code now.

0903.
