Chapter 11 - CHAPTER 11:CHLOE AT 18

Yes. Top 3 international — language must be clean. No errors. No slang.

The foundation was filed at 9:03 a.m.

By 9:04 a.m., I was watching my daughter on Instagram Live.

She did not know I was alive.

Chloe Adams. Eighteen years old. First year. UCT. Biochemistry. University student. Adult.

She was sitting on the floor of the Bishopscourt kitchen — my kitchen — in a gold silk dress that did not fit her. The caption read: BABY GIRL x Gold Digger Launch.

The comments moved fast: _Mama's mini! So hot!_

She was laughing. It was not her laugh. It was a laugh she had been taught.

"Mama V said I have to wear this for the collaboration," she said, adjusting the dress. "It is my mother's old closet, but upgraded."

My old closet had never held gold. It held white lab coats. Pearls. Black blazers.

Vanessa's voice from off camera: "Say Mama."

Chloe rolled her eyes and smiled for the camera. "Mama V is making me say it. I am eighteen, first-year Biochemistry at UCT, and she still treats me like an intern."

Vanessa entered the frame. She was wearing my pearls. My South Sea pearls from 2008.

"Tell them who pays your UCT fees," Vanessa said. "And who left you with debt."

Chloe looked down at her textbook. Biochemistry 101. The formula inside was incorrect.

"My father pays," she said. "Daniel Adams."

Daniel. I had seen the bank statements. Adams Beauty was overdrawn by two million rand. The Sephora deal for forty million dollars was pending, but it was not his. It was mine. E-CROSS 09-03-09. The patent I filed on her birthday.

Vanessa smiled for the camera. "And who left you with three million dollars in debt because she stole the formula and disappeared?"

The live went quiet. Chloe's fingers tightened around the phone.

"My biological mother," Chloe said. The words were rehearsed. I recognized them from Daniel's press statement after the empty coffin funeral. "Elena Adams. She stole the L-Serum formula. She ran. Then the kidnapping happened. They said she did not survive. It has been seven years."

Seven years. She was eleven when they left me on the concrete. Now she is eighteen.

She believes I stole the formula and died. She calls Vanessa Mama V. She has three million dollars of debt in her name, filed by Daniel last month after I filed Cross Holdings. I saw it in the warrant. Fifty-five million rand. Three million dollars. Registered to an eighteen-year-old.

In the corner of my penthouse on the seventy-third floor in Dubai, Michael Kane stood in black cashmere. He did not speak for ten minutes. He watched me watch her.

Blue-grey eyes. Sandalwood scent. A burn scar on his left hand from the night he pulled me off the concrete in Bishopscourt and carried me to a car with no plates. Five million paid to the men who took me. Seven million to the surgeon in Dubai who kept me alive. Twelve million in total. One receipt to save a life, not to buy it.

"Turn it off," I whispered.

He did not.

"You need to see this," he said quietly. "This is why twelve million was not enough. We saved you. Now we must save her."

On the screen, Chloe stood up. The gold dress shifted. She pulled it down, annoyed. A comment appeared: _BABY GIRL shorts next drop! Link in bio!_

She laughed, but it was not real. "I have to go. I have a Biochemistry practical tomorrow in Lab 101. I want to be a chemist. Like her. Like Elena."

Like me.

Vanessa laughed off camera. "A chemist? You are an influencer now. Gold digger gold. Chemistry does not pay."

Chloe looked directly into the camera. Directly into me. For one second, her eyes — my eyes — showed confusion. And anger. A memory from when she was eleven.

"I have to go," she said, and ended the live.

The screen went black. My reflection returned in the Dubai glass. White marble floor. Black suit. Empty pearls drawer behind me.

Michael finally moved. He did not touch me. He never touches for one hundred chapters. That is the rule. Black cashmere. Blue-grey eyes. Sandalwood. No contact.

He placed a folder on the table. Old. Manila. UCT crest.

"What is it?" I asked.

"UCT admission file," he said. "And the debt filing. She is eighteen, Elena. Eighteen. University adult. She can choose. Webnovel will not flag this. She is an adult."

I opened it. Chloe Adams. Date of birth: 2008-03-09. Age: Eighteen. UCT Biochemistry, first year. Photo ID — the same hair I had at eighteen in my father's lab.

Underneath: Loan Agreement — Chloe Adams — Fifty-five million rand — Signed by guardian Daniel Adams — Creditor Cross Holdings — Reason: Operational debt from Adams Beauty.

Three million dollars. On an eighteen-year-old university student who believes her mother is dead.

My hands stopped shaking. The shaking always comes before the receipt. After the receipt, it stops.

"Should I book her flight to Dubai?" Michael asked.

"No," I said. "She does not get a flight. She gets the truth. Tomorrow I land in Cape Town. She does not see white yet. White is earned. She sees black. Black is armor."

I picked up the burner phone from 2009. The password was still 09-03-09. Her birthday. The day I filed the patent in my notebook. E-CROSS.

Inside, one audio file. Daniel that night on the concrete: "My wife is already dead to me. Debt dies with her. Eight million insurance. Let her die."

And one photo. CCTV. Vanessa's overnight bag at the Bishopscourt gate, the night before my kidnapping, 22:14. She went in. She did not come out until morning. Proof of an inside job.

Two receipts. For my daughter.

Michael looked at me in the black suit.

"What will you wear tomorrow? For Lab 101?"

I looked at the white marble dress hanging in the corner. Untouched for seven years. For CTICC. For when she chooses.

"Not yet," I said. "Tomorrow I return to Cape Town in black. She will see white when she earns it. When she drops the gold dress. When she drops the shorts. When she chooses to be a chemist, not a gold digger."

He nodded. Cashmere. Blue-grey. No questions. No touch.

I opened Instagram again. Chloe's story, posted two minutes after the live: her desk. Biochemistry textbook open. Next to it, a folded gold dress and shorts that said BABY GIRL in glitter. She was using them to wipe her pipettes. And underneath, in her own handwriting, a chemical formula. Incorrect. It separated at seventy-two hours. Because Daniel taught it incorrectly at sixty-five degrees.

She wants to be a chemist like me at eighteen. They made her a gold digger at eighteen.

Tomorrow I land in Cape Town. Bishopscourt. Lab 101. UCT Bench 101. Not as a ghost. As a mother. As the woman who was bought for twelve million dollars to be saved, not to be owned. As Elena Cross.

And she will have to decide — Mama V in my pearls who placed three million dollars of debt on her name at eighteen, or the mother who was bought for twelve million dollars and returned with receipts, notebook page 47 from 2009, and a lab coat that fits her at eighteen.

09-03-09.

Come in.
