Chapter 87 - Vegapunk Wants to Run Away from Home

Inside the Navy's research base — Vegapunk's laboratory.

Vegapunk stared at the bracelet on his left wrist, then suddenly raised the knife in his right hand.

Sengoku, who was standing nearby, froze in shock, his heart skipping a beat.

"Dr. Vegapunk, what are you doing!?"

"It's fine. I just want to study this bracelet," Vegapunk replied calmly. "The level of technology in this thing is extraordinary. Studying it might help me improve my own inventions."

"Then why are you holding a knife!?" Sengoku shuffled forward in tiny, nervous steps.

"Obviously to take it apart. It's hard to study while I'm still wearing it." Vegapunk's tone was perfectly matter-of-fact. The bracelet was practically fused to his wrist—he'd need some external force to remove it.

"Don't you dare take it apart!!!" Sengoku snatched the knife away in a flash, roaring in alarm.

"Don't take what apart?" Vegapunk turned around with a puzzled expression. "My hand? Or the bracelet?"

"Neither!!!" Sengoku bellowed, looking like a furious parent who'd just caught their kid trying to carve up a $10,000 laptop with a fruit knife.

You money-burning maniac!

"It's fine. If I lose a hand, I can just build a mechanical one. I'm good at it. Everyone who's used my prosthetics says they work great," Vegapunk said nonchalantly, leaning his head back to avoid Sengoku's flying spit as he spoke in an even tone.

"That's… not the point…" Sengoku rubbed his temples, at a complete loss for words.

"Think about it," he sighed. "That bracelet connects to a store full of advanced technology and blueprints. If you break it, all of that will be gone!"

"You—"

"I can't always stay by your side," Sengoku cut him off, already knowing what the scientist was about to say.

The manic gleam in Vegapunk's eyes gradually faded, reason returning to his expression. "You're right. I shouldn't lose more than I gain."

He nodded thoughtfully. "No need to take mine apart. I'll just ask around in the group—maybe someone's selling their Quantum Bracelet."

The bracelet, officially called the Bracelet-Type Light Brain, was essentially a membership slot to the Dimensional Store.

Such a rare item—who would ever sell it!?

Sengoku shook his head, not holding out any hope for Vegapunk's little shopping request. He decided that once he got back, he'd issue a Navy-wide side mission: find another bracelet.

As Sengoku was thinking that, Vegapunk suddenly exclaimed in delight."Someone's selling one!"

"Eh!?" Sengoku's face froze in disbelief. There's really an idiot willing to sell?

(Black Zetsu: …Thanks. I feel vaguely insulted.)

"Who? Who's selling it?" Sengoku craned his neck curiously.

White Demon: "If you win first place in a cosplay contest, I'll sell you one slot."

"'Cosplay'? What's that?" Vegapunk tilted his head back, bumping into Sengoku's curly beard as he looked up at him.

"Emmmm…" Sengoku thought hard for a few seconds, then replied seriously, "No idea."

"If you don't know, you should've said so earlier. What a waste of time." Vegapunk straightened up, stared at the group chat, and typed:"What is cosplay?"

Sengoku: "..."

Someone in the chat, who lived in a modern world, quickly responded.

Sakata Gintoki: "Cosplay is short for 'costume play'—basically, you dress up as popular characters from TV shows or anime."

Gintoki came from a world full of entertainment—TV dramas, movies, and manga flourished everywhere—but thanks to all the chaos, the cosplay culture never really developed.

Vegapunk: "TV shows? Anime? What are those?"

Sakata Gintoki: "You can find books and shows in the Store. Just use the search filter—you'll find stories from every imaginable world. Don't freak out if you see your own name or life story in there, haha. The Store has everything. Even your biography might be for sale… hahaha…"

Jiraiya: "Kid, you've piqued my interest."

He suddenly wanted to see if he ever managed to win over Tsunade.

Uchiha Madara: "..."A bad feeling about this "life story."

Black Zetsu: "..."A very bad feeling about this.

Danzo Shimura: "..."Something tells me I'm gonna get punched.

Edogawa Conan: "..."Kind of want to see if I turn back into Shinichi… but what if it spoils all the future cases!? Ugh!

Ultraman Dyna: "..."Could I learn about my future enemies and threats ahead of time?

After a flood of ellipses, the chat went silent—everyone rushed into the Store to search for their own futures.

Sengoku, of course, was no exception. Using the search bar, he easily found The Life and Times of Sengoku the Buddha.

He purchased it. A thick, weathered book with a strong sense of history materialized in his hands.

Sengoku: "..."Why does mine look ancient?

He shrugged it off and began to read. The biography listed his life's events in clear, concise summaries—skipping over trivialities and recording only major incidents.

For example: A month later, the Navy clashes with the Whitebeard Pirates—The Summit War.

Snap—

Sengoku shut the book instantly.

If it were the old, sickly Whitebeard, maybe they could fight him. But the prime Whitebeard? Marineford won't survive!

And since Portgas D. Ace was handed to the World Government, that battle was inevitable. They couldn't refuse.

The pain of being a corporate wage slave.

Honestly, Sengoku really didn't want to fight a Whitebeard who was now a Dimensional Store member—stronger than he ever was in his prime.

No matter who won, Marineford was doomed.

Thinking about the aftermath alone gave him a headache.

I swear, I could punch that idiot boss right now…

As Sengoku covered his face, he peeked through his fingers and saw Vegapunk reading a book with great enthusiasm.

Did he buy his own biography too?

Curious, Sengoku leaned closer—and noticed that the pages were filled not with text, but drawings.

Sengoku: "?"

"Vegapunk, what are you reading?"

"Manga," Vegapunk replied without looking up.

"..." Sengoku blinked. Then his expression darkened. "Wait, don't tell me you're actually planning to join that cosplay contest?"

"Don't! The other worlds are dangerous! If you disappear, it'll throw everything into chaos!"

The Navy and World Government would go mad searching for him.

"It's fine," Vegapunk said coolly. "I bought an android that looks exactly like me from Mr. Tony. I'll just tell everyone not to disturb me for a day. Easy."

He added casually, "And don't worry about my safety. I also bought a stand-in bodyguard. It works great—more than enough to protect me."

Sengoku: "..."

Such a well-prepared runaway plan!
