Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: Time to move out?

"It's been two years since I started training this body… I hope I'm finally ready to enlist as a knight," Adrian thought as he rested beneath the shade of a tree. The boy he once was long gone, and in his place stands someone forged by relentless effort. Survival in this harsh world demanded strength, and he had no choice but to adapt.

He stared at his calloused hands, the rough skin a silent testament to his struggle. A faint smile tugged at his lips. "Alright… I've learned to act normal in the city. It's a good thing I inherited this kid's memories; otherwise, I'd still be walking around like a clueless samurai."

The thought made him chuckle softly, though there was no one around to hear it. Rising to his feet, he brushed the dirt from his worn tunic and rolled his shoulders to loosen the ache in his muscles. "Now then, let's prepare some food and water for the journey. The city won't come to me, and neither will this child's dream of becoming a knight."

With quiet determination burning in his eyes, Adrian packed his few belongings into a rough leather satchel. Two years of hardship, training, and silent perseverance had led to this moment, the first real step toward a future he never asked for, yet one he was determined to claim.

*Two Days Later*

"Hm… According to the boy's memories, this should be part of the kingdom of Wrenbrook," Adrian murmured, gazing at the sprawling fields stretching toward the horizon. A distant city wall rose like a gray spine against the blue sky. "Looks like I'm finally here."

He tightened the strap of his satchel and started walking toward the gates, unaware of the encounters and the chaos that awaited him within those towering walls.

"Hmm… that must be the tavern. There's the fruit shop, and now… where on earth do I find the enlistment office?"

Adrian muttered under his breath as he strolled down the cobblestone streets, his eyes darting between unfamiliar signs and bustling vendors. The capital city was larger than he imagined, and the overwhelming noise and crowd didn't make things any easier.

Maybe I should ask someone, he thought, pausing near the entrance of a lively tavern. The warm glow of lanterns spilled onto the street, accompanied by laughter and the faint sound of a lute being played inside. It seemed like the perfect place to find information.

He pushed the wooden door open and stepped inside. The smell of roasted meat and freshly baked bread hit him instantly, making his empty stomach growl in protest. Patrons filled the room, mercenaries boasting about their victories, merchants haggling over deals, and locals sharing gossip.

Behind the counter stood a young woman with chestnut hair tied neatly with a ribbon. Her lively emerald eyes sparkled as she served drinks to the customers, her cheerful demeanor brightening the entire tavern.

Adrian approached the counter cautiously, trying to appear confident despite feeling completely out of place.

"Hello," he began politely. "Sorry for bothering you, but… could you tell me where I can enlist as a knight?"

The girl looked up from the mug she was polishing, her expression shifting from curiosity to mild surprise.

"A knight, huh?" she repeated, tilting her head slightly. "That's not something you hear every day from a stranger. You new around here?"

Adrian gave a small, awkward smile. "Something like that. I've just arrived in the capital."

She studied him for a moment, her eyes narrowing slightly as if assessing whether he was serious or just boasting like some drunk mercenary. Then, she let out a soft laugh.

"Well, if you're serious, you'll want to head to the garrison near the northern gate. That's where the enlistment takes place," she explained, setting the mug aside. "Name's Alina, by the way. And you are…?"

"Adrian," he replied, giving a small nod.

"Nice to meet you, Adrian. Word of advice," Alina said, leaning forward slightly, her tone playful yet sharp. "Don't expect it to be easy. The knights here aren't exactly handing out titles like free bread. You'll need strength, discipline, and… well, a little luck."

Adrian smiled faintly. "I figured as much."

Alina chuckled. "Good. At least you're not one of those idiots who think shiny armor makes them invincible." She straightened up, wiping her hands on her apron. "So, northern gate. Follow the main road and you'll see a big stone building with banners, can't miss it."

"Thank you, Alina," Adrian said sincerely.

As he turned to leave, she called out with a grin, "Hey! If you survive the trials, come back and buy me a drink, future knight!"

Adrian paused for a second before chuckling under his breath. 'She's lively…'he thought, stepping back into the crowded streets with a clearer sense of direction and an odd sense of motivation burning quietly in his chest.
