Chapter 18 - The impact of Financial Status, Parents' Influence and Peer Influence in college desired course of Grade 12 students in Benigno Ninoy S. Aquino High School

Choosing a college course is a crucial decision for students, as it directly impacts their future careers. However, many students struggle with this choice due to financial constraints, parental expectations, and peer influence. This study explores how financial status, parental influence, and peer influence affect students' decision-making in selecting a college course. By understanding these factors, students can make more informed choices, reducing future regrets. The research was conducted among Grade 12 students at Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino High School, aiming to provide insights that support better career guidance and academic planning.

A study of Contini and Zotti (2022) found that financial background significantly affects students' course choices, with low-income students facing greater challenges in completing university. Khoo et al. (2015) found that both college and non-college students consider parents the most influential factor in choosing a college and course. Parents are seen as key financial supporters and a credible source of advice due to their perceived knowledge and experience in higher education. Castrogiovanni (2002) describes peer groups as close friends of similar age who influence social and academic behavior. They help develop life skills and can positively impact achievement by encouraging ambition and goal-setting. This research study utilizes a quantitative correlational descriptive research design. The study was also implemented in Benigno Ninoy S. Aquino High School. This study has 181 total of respondents who are Grade 12 students in Benigno Ninoy S. Aquino High School. The results show that most respondents are male, aged 17-18, and from lower-income backgrounds. Financial status significantly influences students' college choices by limiting options, causing stress, and making them hesitant to pursue costly courses. Many prefer nearby schools even if their desired course is unavailable. Parental and peer influence also play a role, with students seeking guidance from parents and receiving support from friends, even when choosing different courses. Overall, financial status has the greatest impact, while parental and peer influence remain neutral factors in decision-making
