The morning light filtered through the curtains as Miranda awoke with pain radiating through her entire body. The SUV collision had left its mark—her ribs protested with each breath, and her head throbbed mercilessly. She reached across the bed for Nolan, finding only cold sheets where his warm body should have been.
Glancing at his bedside clock to avoid the agony of turning her neck, she saw it was barely 6 AM. No wonder her eyes felt like they'd been rubbed with sandpaper; she'd barely slept four hours.
Ignoring her body's complaints, Miranda pushed herself up and went in search of Nolan. She found him in his office, hunched over his desk surrounded by scattered papers and files. His coffee cup sat within reach, and he still wore yesterday's rumpled clothes. The dark circles under his eyes told her he hadn't slept at all.
"Please tell me you didn't stay up all night," she said, easing herself carefully into the chair across from him.
