The cleanup on the lunar surface had only just begun to wrap up when the communicator inside the Quinjet started blaring again. Fury's voice came through heavier than ever before.
"Everyone, pay attention. A chain reaction has started on Earth! The energy signal released when the Moon's core shattered seems to have activated certain leftover 'things' on Earth! Queens, New York is the first to show a high-energy reaction—something similar, but with a different structure, is forming and causing destruction!"
"Guess the vacation ends early." Tony snapped his fingers. "Baldy, I'm gonna need you for one more ride."
Saitama nodded without hesitation and boarded the Quinjet again. This time, though, he specifically glanced at the storage compartment—making sure his shopping bag was still there, and especially that the two cartons of discounted eggs were safe and sound.
The jet returned to Earth at top speed, punching through the atmosphere and heading straight for Queens. From above, they could already see smoke and dust choking the streets, with explosions erupting now and then along with people's terrified screams.
The Quinjet swept in low. The hatch opened, and Saitama jumped straight down, landing lightly on the roof of a mostly intact newsstand. The moment he touched down, he saw a red-and-blue figure get violently hurled through the air by a monster made from twisted rebar, concrete chunks, shattered glass, and ripped-up asphalt.
"Wooow! That thing hits hard!" Spider-Man flipped in midair, fired a web line, and stuck it to a nearby building wall to stabilize himself. He looked pretty roughed up, his suit covered in dust.
The monster was about three stories tall, with no fixed shape. It kept grabbing car wrecks, streetlights, trash cans—anything it could—and absorbing them into its body, becoming bigger and uglier by the second. It swung a thick arm of rebar and concrete and smashed at Spider-Man again.
Spider-Man tried to web up the arm, but the webs either snapped—or got absorbed, becoming part of the creature's body.
"Man, this guy won't break! It keeps absorbing stuff and getting stronger!"
Saitama hopped down from the newsstand and walked to the base of the wall where Spider-Man clung. He looked up at the monster and asked in his usual flat tone, "Need help?"
"Absolutely, Saitama!" Spider-Man sounded like he'd just seen salvation. "My attacks barely do anything! It's too tough—and it regenerates way too fast!"
As if to prove Spider-Man's point, the creature found a new target. A massive arm of concrete and steel screamed through the air as it slammed down at Saitama.
Saitama simply shifted his body slightly.
The arm crashed into the spot where he'd been standing, blasting a crater into the street and sending rubble flying. Saitama glanced at the pieces that had been knocked off the arm—only to be sucked back in and fused again—and commented, "So it absorbs stuff and rebuilds itself."
The creature missed and let out a silent roar—felt through the vibration of the ground—then grabbed an abandoned taxi and hurled it like a boulder.
Saitama flicked his hand like he was batting away a beach ball, smacking the taxi off course and sending it flying into an empty storefront.
He decided to attack directly. He stepped forward and drove a straight punch into the monster's messy torso of concrete and rebar.
Thump!
A heavy, dull impact echoed out. The supposedly rock-hard body was punched clean through, leaving a huge hole as chunks of concrete and twisted steel blasted outward. The monster staggered backward
