As night approached, the sound of the garage door opening was an immediate tension spike. Win returned home.
Charlotte, having settled King with a book and a clean glass of water, had just retreated to her own guest room to give them both some space. She had barely closed her door when Win's footsteps moved quickly down the hall.
Win went straight to King's room. He found King sleeping on the bed, resting. Win was carrying a large bag of things he had purchased, soft pajamas, new slippers, and a fresh blanket.
"King," Win said softly, placing the bag on the floor. He tried to project calm, helpfulness. "I brought you some new things. Are you feeling any better? Have you eaten?"
King didn't answer. He simply looked at the bag, then back up at Win.
As Win took a step closer, intending to sit on the edge of the bed, King's voice, though quiet, was sharp. "Don't come closer."
