"King," Win whispered, his voice trembling as he sought the ultimate reassurance. "Have you forgiven me?"
From her hiding spot in the hallway corner, Charlotte watched, her heart pounding. She knew King's heart was complicated. Even though she hated what Win had done and wished she could call the police, she was bound by King's plea to let him handle it. She recognized that Win was all King had, and King, despite everything, wasn't ready to let go. She watched, wondering if the trauma would be swept away by King's deep-seated love for Win.
King's eyes squeezed shut, and he pulled away slightly. The fragile moment shattered instantly.
"I can't," King finally managed, his voice barely audible, thick with fresh tears. "I can't forgive you. Not yet."
A surge of relief went through Charlotte. Looks like King is determined to fight back this time, she thought to herself.
