Chapter 2 - It's Real!

The dim light of the sun pressed against Vaalk's eyelids forcing him to squint as he slept; waking up with a groan he pushes himself up from a straw mat, a frown etched on his face as he takes a look at the unfamiliar room.

'Where…? Where am I?' he asked himself as the first thing he noticed was an unfamiliar ceiling held up by rough wood beams, charms that had a subtle glow hanging on the walls, ropes tied from one beam to the other lined with herbs dangling from wind that seeped in through the windows.

And bones of various animals, some small and some big enough that the sight of them made him gulp down some saliva.

He felt shivers as his memory came back to him. 'That pain… What was that? What happened to me?'

"Oh, you're awake" a calm voice accompanied by the soft sound of grinding brings him out of his head before he could piece anything together.

Startled, he turned sharply and saw a wizened old goblin grinding away some herbs on a table.

"You… Thank you for saving me" Vaalk hurriedly thanked him, thinking he must have been rushed here after he passed out and this old man saved his life.

The old goblin stopped grinding and gave a small chuckle "No need for that. I didn't save you. When you were brought here you were already fine. Not a scratch, I couldn't sense anything wrong with you.

But I decided to keep you here so I could monitor you. Yet for reasons I can't explain…" He tilted his head, studying Vaal as he looked at him hoping to find something on his face maybe. "…you slept for two whole days. Nothing was wrong with you, but still, you wouldn't wake"

Vaalk's eyed opened wide at that revelation. 'I've been asleep for 2 days? Even on my laziest days back on earth I could sleep in for 10 hours at best'

"You must be starving. Here, something to eat." Vaalk was once again brought out of his head as the old man handed him some porridge, at that moment the light coming from the windows intensified on the old man making him look like a divine being to Vaalk

"What's wrong with you? Why are you staring at me with those perverted eyes. Hurry up and take this from my hands before I change my…"

The old goblin suddenly couldn't feel the bowl in his hand anymore, raising his head, he saw Vaalk devouring the porridge ravenously like a starved animal. "I guess he must have been hungry" shaking his head, he left Vaalk to finish his food while he went back to his herbs.

Eating about half the contents of the bowl seemed to calm Vaalk down enough for him to stop thinking about the food in front of him 'The old Goblin must be some kind of shaman, they're more or less like the mages of humans with some differences here and there'

'I remember seeing a blue screen in front of me before I passed out, I wonder if it's what I think it is'

'System' he hesitantly called out in his head, eyes closed half expecting nothing to happen.

'it's… it's real! I have a system! I wasn't left for dead in this godforsaken place!' "Ouch!"

"The next time you yell like that and interrupt my work; I'm going to seal your mouth shut!"

Vaalk, forgetting where he was let out an exclamation upon seeing the system screen pop up. He startled the old goblin, interrupting his work, causing him to throw a ladle at his head.

Promptly apologizing, Vaalk brought his focus back to the system's screen, and in expectation he called out in his head 'Stats'
